✅ Papercut fixed: Gemini won’t cut you off if you pause while talking on Android anymore. (iOS in a few weeks!) So next time you hit the mic icon, feel free to pause, take a breath, or ramble. No more anxiety to speak it all out before @GeminiApp jumps in prematurely.

@trucku_kun @ssamat Many folks aren't aware how scammers use sideloading to harm users at scale, e.g. broadcasting texts to massive databases to trick people into installing malware. A great example is FluBot. Check out how that scam worked: europol.europa.eu/media-press/ne… ADV stops these attacks.

After listening carefully to a lot of feedback, we’re announcing a new advanced flow to go along with traditional sideloading (which isn’t going anywhere!) It’s for users who want to install unverified apps on Android. By instituting a 24 hour waiting period, it carefully balances protecting users from real threats from scammers and providing power users with the freedom to install unverified developers. Android offers lots of options to users for installing apps...

📣 Sideloading is here to stay. Users will be able to install apps from unverified developers via a new advanced flow, which includes safeguards that stop scammers and maintain choice. Learn more about how Android developer verification is evolving → goo.gle/advance-flow

@katabaticgale @backlon yes, it's a legitimate issue. people get hacked because they just follow the instructions someone is telling them to sideload an app.

@ashutosh28 @AndroidDev Yes. And will just quickly note another thing: the advanced flow will just be for unverified apps, sideloading for verified apps will remain unchanged, as it is today.

@AndroidDev If I turn off Developer Options after enabling sideloading, can I still sideload apps?

@backlon Smart approach. Time-locks in smart contracts work the same way - break the urgency, preserve the choice. Good security design that respects user sovereignty.

I think I understand your concern, but please let me know if the below makes sense, as the blog post has a little more detail. These limited distribution accounts are designed for students and hobbyists. For devs that want to distribute more broadly without verification, we are building the advanced flow with the *one-time* waiting period to ensure that remains a possibility. android-developers.googleblog.com/2026/03/androi…

Sounded good up until this point. Limited distribution accounts. Limited number of devices.

📣Important clarifications on the new advanced flow for sideloading on Android! 1) It is a one-time process. Once you go through it, you can choose to allow installing unregistered apps indefinitely. 2) ADB installs are not affected. The waiting period does not apply to app installs via ADB. 3) It's my understanding that you don't have to keep developer options enabled after you enable the advanced flow. Once you make the change on your device, it's enabled. If you turn off developer options, then to turn off the advanced flow, you would first have to turn developer options back on.

Android has always been about choice. Today, we’re sharing how we’re evolving the ecosystem so you don’t have to choose between an open platform and a secure one. We’re introducing a new advanced flow for sideloading where power users can go through a one time flow to enable their devices to load software from unverified developers. We’ve designed this process to stop more vulnerable users from being coerced to do this during a guided scam (which are a major problem today for people) We also have new account types for students and hobbyists that address their feedback.

Currently if you install Epic Game Store and have Google Play Protect in default on setting it cannot install apps so the only solution is to turn off an the security features that are supposed to protect you to use it. If you have the Advanced Protection turned on for your account you have to install via ADB for any install but at minimum if a third party app store is installed it should be and to have an "app store" permission to install and update apps. It's honestly really frustrating because I generally want the protections but it's not setup very well.

@LinkofHyrule89 I may not fully understand your question but I think the answer is yes? We definitely allow apps to be installed from multiple app stores and Google Play Protect is unchanged.

@backlon Are you going to have it so you can install apps from third party stores without turning off Google Play Protect and such?

BTW, in case it's not clear: Advanced Flow's waiting period is a One Time Thing. Once it's done you don't have do to it again, and you can turn developer options back off in case you have apps that get fussy with them on.

Android is open, and some things are not changing. You can still sideload apps from verified developers right away, without the Advanced Flow. We have new developer account types for hobbyists and students. And of course ADB remains. And of course this is all in addition to traditional app stores, where (again!) Android offers more choice and freedom The new advanced flow is focused on protecting users from scams while enabling sideloading for unverified apps. Here’s a good explanation of how it works: techcrunch.com/2026/03/19/goo…
