@tjm585 For sure, I just feel like what works about R1 is the absence of Space Wizards. And when one shows up, it should be pure terror. Plus, purely from a meta-perspective, that scene would have hit harder if you thought you were getting a move with no Vader. And then: the breathing.

The first scene with Darth Vader in the lava castle and the "choke" pun is an abomination.
The second scene where he comes out of darkness and is terrifying is one of the best parts of the movie, that would be even better if not for the first scene undermining the reveal.

My controversial 'Rogue One' opinion is I don't actually mind the Darth Vader scene because it leads us into 'A New Hope' and bridges the tonal gap.

It's a Law and Order style half-and-half where you've got grizzled Rebel Cops chasing down former Imperials in the Outer Rim, followed by War Crimes tribunals trying to untangle questions of responsibility under fascism, oppression, etc.

This is half right. The first appearance of Vader in his stupid volcano castle where he makes a pun to Krennic is the worst part of the movie. BUT when he comes at the end as this terrifying monstrosity, it hits precisely because the story has been so grounded previously.

Also, the good guys did still beat the First Order in the end? Like, I get that it turns out that the Good Guys had to beat the Bad Guys a second time, but that doesn't mean it's not important to also beat them the first time!

This is dumb. History and war is cyclical. The efforts done to dismantle the Empire are not “all for naught” just because the First Order invaded and conquered the Galaxy 3 decades after. It’s a constant effort to keep fascism at bay, not just one war.

This is right EXCEPT Andor S1 makes clear that the Empire made use of slave labor to build the Death Star. Which always made sense because how else do you keep the thing a secret - paid laborers will want to eventually go home and they will blab.

I don't understand. They came up with the perfect formula for future Predator movies "What if the Predator, but in [insert historical period]." They could make those once a year for decades and never run out of options! Samurai! The Middle Ages! Genghis Khan!
