Every organization I talk to is somewhere in the same five-stage cycle with AI. I call it the Disruption Confidence Cycle. Most teams can locate themselves in about ten seconds. See if you can. Stage one: Disruption. Something new lands and breaks assumptions that held for years. Nobody asked for it. It doesn't care. The old playbook still works, but everyone can feel the expiration date on it. Stage two: Doubt. This is where most people live right now with AI. Am I too late? Is this real or hype? Will it take my job? Doubt feels like a personal failing. It isn't. It's a stage, and it ends. Stage three: Clarity. The moment the fog lifts on one specific thing. Not "I understand AI." More like "I understand what AI can do for THIS task on MY desk." Clarity is always narrow before it's wide. Stage four: Confidence. You've done the narrow thing enough times that it's boring. Now you try the second thing, and the third. The tool stops being a topic and starts being a habit. Stage five: Momentum. Other people start asking YOU how you did it. You've become the person in the building who figured it out. Every wave creates these people. There's no reason it can't be you. The through-line of the whole cycle: you are not behind.
