In Old Arizona is so laughably bad that it turns the corner and becomes highly entertaining. You know that fictional movie in “Singin’ in the Rain” called The Dueling Cavalier? The one that was laughed out of theaters and had to be retooled into The Dancing Cavalier? In Old Arizona is The Dueling Cavalier without ever being turned into The Dancing Cavalier. Stiff and awkward dialogue, laughable acting and sound quality so horrible that you can barely make out what anyone is saying at times. It’s so clear that those behind the camera only worked on silent films and simply had no idea what they were doing when being forced to switch to talkies. Though on a positive note, the film becomes highly compelling in the final 20 minutes and actually has the guts to break traditional storytelling norms. A must watch for those interested in the dark ages of Hollywood filmmaking.
