I'm heading to Liverpool today for #BES2024 as part of the Peatland and Wetland Special Interest Group team. Come and say hi to me and @ScootJD to get involved in @BES_Peat #peatlands #wetlands

@AndreasHeinem If you have just four measurements a year I wouldn't try and estimate annual fluxes - too much scope for large errors. This might also explain your high inter-annual variation. There is a very real risk of misleading others. The old adage: 'Extraordinary results require ...'
English

@baird_andy Oh I know the paper :) we are thinking about how to model the fluxes. Not that easy when you consider the literature ... we normally measure seasonally but even monthly as for CEH resulted in very high emissions for those years.
English

#methane fluxes from 3 UK blanket bogs.
Wet & Warm likely an issue.
High CH4 emissions kicking in again this year (very wet and warm) especially at the wettest site (Mossdale).
peatland-es-uk.york.ac.uk/home
Even more concerning when using a GWP over 20-years (vs the usual 100-years).

English
@AndreasHeinem How often do you do flux chamber tests - what is the spread of tests through the year? I think I would always prefer modelling to using a mean or median. You've obviously see this: mires-and-peat.net/pages/volumes/…
English

@baird_andy Yes, I know, they are high, but not impossible and explained by higher pH and warm & wet conditions. CEH have found a very similar spike during those years. When we detect ebullition we repeat a measurements. Simple mean or median so far...models to be explored! 😎

Funded PhD scholarship available on peatland hydrology and carbon cycling. It will examine the impacts of windfarm disturbance and restoration techniques. Supervised by @catherinesmoody @nichollebell8 and I. Deadline = 8 January 2025 yes-dtn.ac.uk/research/the-i…

Pleased to have been recognised as an oustanding reviewer by the American Geophysical Union.. eos.org/editors-vox/in… agu.org/honors/announc… Reviewing is one of those jobs nobody particularly likes but it makes an important contribution to our respective disciplines.

Extremely worrying. The importance of #wetlands such as this can't be understated.

Results from my peaty "Grand Tour", where I collected 405 surface water samples from 52 to 63°N, showed how varied DOM composition can be, but also how DOM can be clustered to maximise DWT efficiency: doi.org/10.1016/j.watr… #PeatTwitter @wateratleeds @rbpmleeds

Super pleased that my first paper based on experiments in my garage 'lab' (#ShedScience) has been accepted for publication 🙂. The topic? The specific yield of peats. More to follow soon.
