Just heard a genuinely bad take from a podcast host on Vicki Shotbolt’s lawsuit against @Steam. The level of deference shown to a multi-billion-dollar platform in a case like this is wild. They argued that @valvesoftware “doesn’t set prices on Steam.” That’s beside the point. Steam’s 30% cut directly influences how developers price their games - and that pressure lands hardest on indie devs, who are effectively new entrepreneurs trying to survive. They also leaned on the tired “30% is the industry norm” defence. Okay - but who set that norm in PC gaming? Valve did. Others followed. Citing @GOGcom (and bizarrely @daz3d, which isn’t even the same market) doesn’t change that reality. What the host conveniently ignored is Steam’s tiered revenue share - 30% up to $10m, 25% after, and 20% beyond $50m - or the fact that @EpicGames takes 0% on a developer’s first $1m per year and only 12% thereafter. In a genuinely open market, that would let developers price their games cheaper elsewhere. But they can’t - because Steam’s ToS requires price parity across storefronts. That’s not neutrality. That’s market power. This lawsuit is about a platform with a dominant market share using its rules to lock in prices, limit competition, and squeeze both indie developers and consumers. Defending that behaviour is baffling. Steam can - and should - be fairer to developers.
