I recently read a peer reviewed paper by an Indian left leading historian which claimed that Mughal rule was moderate in India, BECAUSE they mostly let Hindus live as dhimmis and pay a jizya (tax) for "protection" and even used Hindus for labor.
It actually listed all the facets of the Mughal rule correctly. That some rulers faced pressure from outside India to not tolerate the infidels and hence acted more harshly by destroying major temples while others were more "lenient" when the pressure was from inside India from other Hindu rulers. This political expediency was then portrayed as "moderate".
Having to pay jizya just because of your religion and living in fear generation after generation is apparently moderation and Hindus are crazy and uneducated for thinking otherwise. #Hinduphobia #gaslighting
