Bernal gives Pedri more freedom off the ball and reduces his defensive burden, since he can handle the pivot role, recovering the ball, covering ground, and protecting the back line. But on the ball, Pedri becomes a bit limited in his attacking impact because he has to stay deeper and carry progression from deeper areas.
Frenkie solves that part of the problem by taking responsibility in buildup, allowing Pedri to play higher and operate between the lines. But then another issue appears, Frenkie is quite soft defensively, which forces Pedri to do more work off the ball again.
Rodri, on the other hand, feels like the perfect pivot to pair with Pedri. He is the only one who removes both compromises. He provides elite defensive security and clean buildup, meaning Pedri can stay advanced and creative without being forced to drop deep or cover extra defensive ground.. It’s not that Bernal or Frenkie aren’t good partners, but Rodri is simply the ideal one.

🚨 Barcelona monitoring Fisnik Asllani and Andres Schjelderup as low-cost options.
➖ No movement on them yet, other than early interest in both.
➕ Players open to a move, but club currently prioritizing Bastoni + studying Alvarez’s feasibility.

🎙️ Vicky López on patience, development and trusting the process in football
🗣️ “I needed three years to adapt, but I could see myself improving every season. Not everyone has that patience.
"It’s normal, people see players like Lamine Yamal or Marc Bernal already in the first team and feel like they need to make the jump immediately or it’s too late. But I don’t think life works that way.”
