Laura Kelly’s veto. The law requires driver’s licenses to list biological sex at birth, male or female. The individual, featured in recent media reports, described the process of surrendering his old ID, paying a $16 replacement fee, missing work, and facing short-term disruptions to banking, voting, and daily routines. This gave me the heebie-jeebies! I came across this fascinating example of Batesian mimicry…a hawk-moth caterpillar that has evolved to look exactly like a snake to deter predators. It tucks its real head away, inflates its rear segments, and reveals large eye-spots that mimic a dangerous reptile. Even a brief hesitation from predators gives this master of disguise time to escape. Nature’s use of patterns and body shapes for survival through deception is brilliant. Wild!
