A researcher just found a critical bug in zcash:native that could have minted unlimited supply. 9 years of audits missed it. Multiple cryptography PhDs missed it. The original ceremony team missed it. The Orchard upgrade in 2022, audited by some of the best security firms in the space, missed it. Claude Opus 4.8 caught it in days. The Zcash team did handle it well. Soft fork in 24 hours, hard fork the next day, no actual inflation, no funds lost. That’s the playbook every protocol should follow when a critical bug shows up. Real respect for the speed. But the bigger lesson is what just happened to the security model of all of crypto. Every “battle-tested” protocol out there has been audited by humans with limited time and a fixed budget. AI doesn’t have either constraint. It can read every line of every codebase in days and never get bored. The next 12 months are going to expose more critical bugs across DeFi, L1s, and bridges than the previous decade combined. Most teams have no idea what’s coming. 🤝
