An Garda Síochána is aware of alleged intimidation and harassment of drivers of trucks and fuel tankers going about their lawful business. This is unacceptable. This is not protest. This is criminal activity. An Garda Síochána will investigate all complaints received!

Big respect to all the members of An Garda Síochana who are doing their job and have no choice but to face and communicate with the protesters and blockades. Seemingly, the only group doing something to try to fix the chaos.

This should have happened days ago but good to see it being done today.

@Irishsugarplum @EoinFBarry Yes, absolutely. Didn’t get to address that in my response. Very important point not just regarding students with special needs but also school bus service essential for schools outside the major cities. Serious issues ahead.

@EoinFBarry Do you realise how many schools have multiple buses? Furthermore, Bus escorts need to get to the bus to be there for collection/drop off of students with special needs to/from their homes.

@EoinFBarry Schools deal with children and so there are supervision requirements. If staff can’t get in then some or all children will be sent home. There’s a real danger to special needs kids especially where their teachers or SNAs can’t get in. Not taking sides, just pointing that out. 2/2

@EoinFBarry @EoinFBarry Firstly, for schools to close over this would be unforgivable. However, we have to live in the real world. The great majority of teachers drive to work, many considerable distances. If there are blockades, they can’t get through them. 1/2

@TimoEim Look, I'm not comfortable this many aspects of these protests but it was clear that individual govt ministers and backbench TDs had a conflicting understanding of what was to happen. Gives the clear impression govt is not united on this. It's their job to have a strategy.

Whether or not representatives of the protestors should have met the govt today, the communication has been appalling. I heard Micheál Martin at lunchtime and was convinced they wouldn't be prevented if they turned up. The protestors clearly understood the same.

What is the strategy? My personal view is that it should never have been allowed to get anywhere near this point but 'we are where we are' and now it really seems to be the government's lack of any clear strategy that is standing in the way of a resolution. Awful situation.

The government seems to be all over the place on this and as a citizen who believes in our democracy and the rule of law, that is completely unacceptable. How do you reconcile the Taoiseach's comments about not allowing tankers dock with government enflaming the standoff further?

I just hope the protesters realise that the point at which public support will go off the cliff edge is when the schools are closed. Whatever happens, it is in their interests to stand down before the schools attempt to open on Monday.

I’m genuinely concerned now as to how schools will reopen next week if this isn’t resolved. How will kids get to school? Just as importantly, how will teachers get there? Many teachers drive to work because they have long commutes themselves.
