Cheng Li-wun, chairperson of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT), made remarks after accepting an invitation from General Secretary Xi Jinping to visit the Chinese mainland in April:
"We oppose 'Taiwan independence' so that we can avert war.
We uphold the 1992 Consensus so that we can build peace.
That is precisely why I am visiting the Chinese mainland.
Continuing to stand firm on the 1992 Consensus and oppose 'Taiwan independence,' we will prove to people in Taiwan and to the whole world one thing:
War between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait is not inevitable,
and there is no need for confrontation and tension across the Strait."

It aims to advance relations between the Communist Party of China and the KMT, as well as peaceful development across the Taiwan Strait.
Cheng reaffirmed the KMT’s commitment to the one-China principle, opposition to “Taiwan independence,” and adherence to the 1992 Consensus in dialogue, to safeguard peace in the Taiwan Strait and pursue win-win cooperation for people on both sides of the Strait.
This trip underscores that steady cross-Strait engagement serves as a stabilizing force for regional peace, security and prosperity.
