Tamil literary traditions mention that the Velirs, the ancient Tamil chieftains, were associated with Dwaraka, and that a ruler referred to as “Thuvarai Koman” presided over the Second Tamil Sangam at Kapatapuram. Purananuru alludes to this lineage in the verse: உவரா வீகைத் துவரை யாண்டு நாற்பத்தொன்பது வழிமுறை வந்த வேளிருள் வேளே The traditional accounts further say that Sage Agastya brought the Velir chiefs from the region of Dwaraka to Tamilakam. These literary references reflect the deep and ancient civilisational connections between Gujarat and Tamilakam.
