Battle of Stratton. 16 May 1643 The Earl of Stamford, despite taking up a formidable position on a hill near Stratton, was decisively defeated by Sir Ralph Hopton and his Cornish Army. This victory secured Cornwall for the royalist cause until their final defeat in 1646.

Siege of London. 15 May 1471 On this day, with Yorkist reinforcements due to arrive, Thomas Neville, the Bastard of Fauconberg, raised the siege of London. With the ending of the siege, King Edward IV’s rule was secure across much of the country.

15 May 1464. Battle of Hexham. John Neville, Lord Montagu, defeated the army of Henry Beaufort, Duke of Somerset. Beaufort and other rebel lords were captured and executed. This victory left only a few Lancastrian-held castles resisting in the North of England.

Siege of Chepstow. 11 May 1648 Cromwell arrives and captures the town. The castle continues to hold out but, on 25 May, Col. Isaac Ewer, makes a breach in the wall and his troops pour into the castle. The garrison commander, Sir Nicholas Kemy’s, is slain in the fighting.

Battle of St. Fagans. 8 May 1648 On this day a parliamentarian army led by Col. Horton defeated a royalist’s force moving towards Cardiff at St. Fagans. Except for a number of garrisons still in royalist hands, the battle ended the revolt in South Wales.

Siege of Old Wardour Castle. 8 May 1643 On this day, Lady Arundel surrendered Old Wardour Castle to the parliamentarians, after a mi ne planted on a garderobe brought down part of a wall. Later, the castle was slighted by the royalists to prevent its further use.

Siege of Lyme Regis. 6 May 1644 Having taken some of the outworks defending the seaside town of Lyme, the royalist, Prince Maurice launched a three-pronged attack against the towns defences. These were repulsed by Col. Robert Blake, Lymes energetic defender.
