Continuing his catechetical series on Vatican II, Pope Leo XIV reflecting on the Dogmatic Constitution Dei verbum, says: “As Saint Jerome rightly points out, ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of God. With this in mind, I encourage you to read and contemplate the inspired word of God daily.”

I had a PhD student once cite a “Kierkegaardian leap of faith to me” in defense of atheism.
My response was “Notorious Christian Danish philosopher Kierkegaard?”
He says “Ummm… yes”
I say “Have you read Kierkegaard?”
He goes “Yeah”
I go “Great. Do you know where the leap of faith is from?”
He says “No”
I say “It’s from Fear and Trembling. Would you like to know what Fear and Trembling is about?”
He says “Yes”
I say “It’s a 300 page philosophical analysis of Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac.”
That was the end of that debate. All I could think about was how many times he’s gotten away with the high and mighty language or a simple citation (which he knows nothing about beyond its impressive sound) against other people who yielded the floor to him, presuming that he was far more knowledgeable than them. Countless people had thought that he was far above their pay grade, playing in a different league and necessarily correct as a result, when in reality he was simply saying the magic words that sound impressive without the faintest clue of their origin or their meaning.
The worst part is these people get away with it over and over because only a select few actually do the reading and it’s only the “expert’s” catastrophic bad luck and hubris that accidentally leads to a run-in with one of these people.

“There are people who really know and those who know how to fake knowledge. You can only tell between the two if you yourself know. And the world is such that the guys who just speak end up in positions of power very often.”

In the current context, we are seeing an actual “short circuit” of #HumanRights. The right to freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, religious freedom, and even the right to life are being restricted in the name of other so-called new rights, with the result that the very framework of human rights is losing its vitality and creating space for force and oppression. This occurs when each right becomes self-referential, and especially when it becomes disconnected from reality, nature, and truth.
