Obviously DeRosa thinking the US had clinched is unforgivable.
But you really can’t fault his managerial decisions. His hands are tied by MLB managers. If he sits guys and they go two weeks without competitive reps, MLB teams won’t let their stars play in future WBCs. Tough spot

@GageEHC I think they believe they have enough internal lefty options (Manzardo/Delauter/Kayfus/Valera/Bazzana) they don’t want to block. The Fry/Noel/Rodriguez group, granted the weak side, is more worrying. They need to target good hitters in general, but I’d guess they target rightys

"Analytics norms" want you to have your best pitcher on the mound at any given time. I would be very, VERY hard pressed to believe that any model would consider an on-fire, 97-99 mph Crochet to be a worse option than any non-Chapman reliever in that bullpen.

The Red Sox won because Garrett Crochet is an absolute monster and because Alex Cora trusted his best players for the moment. He trusted the team’s platoon strategy against lefties, trusted Crochet to go deep (against analytics norms) and trusted Chapman to finish things out.

Been thinking about Cliff Lee this week, the only other Cleveland starting pitcher I can remember getting a standing ovation on the road (he took a no-hitter into the eighth against St. Louis in 2009)
