the cost of (well done red button service across 100 cafes - 100x cafe revenue) seems tiny compared to the benefit to the city, they’d make it up in increased property tax from people wanting to live there

I think ~half the people I know who dream of doing this would consider working on it tomorrow full time if they knew most of their time would get to go into the fun parts. And luckily the fun parts (general vibe/ambience, running it, being friendly) seem the most important

Detroit is in the process of removing I-375, a highway that cut right through downtown and destroyed a black neighborhood. The city and state are about to waste this opportunity (and federal funds) by replacing the highway with a nine lane road - a highway by another name.
