@MartinSLewis Any numbers of the proportion of graduates who leave with debt vs those who's parents pay their fees? It's an unfair system which disproportionately favours those from more well-off backgrounds vs working class kids who are left with an additional tax that the rich don't have.

Sorry I can't agree to do that - as I think people need to understand how it works. I am very careful with my phrasing, note the post you're responding to says "for most with the loan it works like a graduate tax" It isn't a graduate tax for many reasons... 1. Its voluntary as you say 2. Its contractual and follows you abroad 3. Its hypothicated to an individual I would rename it a 'graduate contribution system'. Yet in a practical financial sense for those who have these loans, you repay it like a 9% addtional tax above the threshold, it impacts mortgage acceptance like a tax not a loan (ie its not on credit file, but reduces disposable income), and it is repaid via the payroll like a tax. And like a tax, not a loan, for many (not all) 'overpaying' won't be worth it.
