In my call today with President @Isaac_Herzog of Israel, I expressed the EU’s solidarity with the Israeli people in light of the daily attacks by Iran and Hezbollah. Such attacks must stop immediately. Amid the ongoing violence in the Middle East, I called for de-escalation and maximum restraint, the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and full respect for international law by all parties. Only diplomacy can ensure a sustainable solution to Iran’s threats, including on the nuclear file. I also urge Israel to seize the moment for direct talks with Lebanon. Lebanese stability and territorial integrity must be preserved, and Israel must ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. We also addressed the humanitarian situation in Gaza, which must urgently improve, as well as the need for Hamas’s disarmament. The situation in the West Bank is extremely worrying, and I urged action to address settler violence. There is an urgent need to de-escalate and end the violence, as well as to halt continued settlement expansion.

The situation in Lebanon is appalling - with already more than 1.3 million internally displaced persons. I spoke with President Aoun to express the EU’s condolences for the loss of civilian lives and our solidarity and support for Lebanon and its people. Lebanon made the right decision to ban Hezbollah’s military activities. Hezbollah must cease its attacks immediately. Israel should stop its military operations and engage in direct talks with the Lebanese authorities. All parties must respect international law and protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.

The EU needs to join efforts with countries that reject spheres of influence and want power politics to be kept in check by international law. Our strategic goal is clear: to create a new international balance through partnerships. Europe will be at the centre of solutions.

Today, on the 10th anniversary of the horrific attacks in Brussels, we remember the victims, their loved ones, and all those affected. We remain vigilant in the face of all threats to our security and way of life. We will never give in to terror or violence. Together, united, we are stronger than hate.

High energy prices are one of the biggest challenges for the competitiveness of the European Union. We must become more autonomous by using our clean homegrown sources of energy. We need to take immediate action to protect our citizens.

Statement with @vonderleyen on the Druzhba pipeline Following the renewed Russian strikes on January 27 on the Druzhba pipeline, leading to the interruption of crude oil supplies to Hungary and Slovakia, we have engaged in intense discussions with Member States and Ukraine at all levels to restore the flow of oil to Hungary and Slovakia. The EU has offered Ukraine technical support and funding. The Ukrainians have welcomed and accepted this offer. European experts are available immediately. Our priority is to ensure energy security for all European citizens. The unilateral decision by the US to lift sanctions on Russian oil exports is very concerning, as it impacts European security. Increasing economic pressure on Russia is decisive for it to accept a serious negotiation for a just and lasting peace. Weakening sanctions increases Russian resources to wage the war of aggression against Ukraine.
