There are 3 Expressions of Speaking in Tongues:
1. The Personal Tongue – Builds the Individual
This is a private, spiritual language spoken to God for personal edification.
Key Verses:
•1 Corinthians 14:2 (NLT) – “For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God… you will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.”
•1 Corinthians 14:4a (NLT) – “A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally.”
•Romans 8:26 – The Spirit helps us pray when we don’t know what to say.

2. The Proof Tongue – A Sign to Unbelievers
This is when believers speak real earthly languages they never learned, as a supernatural sign.
Key Verses:
•Acts 2:4–6 – The disciples spoke in other languages, and people heard their own native tongues.
•Acts 2:8 – “How is it that we hear them speaking in our own native languages?”
•1 Corinthians 14:22 – “So you see that speaking in tongues is a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers.”

3. The Prophetic Tongue – Builds the Church
This is used in church services and must be interpreted so everyone can benefit.

•1 Corinthians 14:27 – “Someone must interpret what they say.”
•1 Corinthians 12:7 – Spiritual gifts are given “to help each other.”
