🚩Jean isn’t praising. He’s drawing a line. Rafic Hariri built the state. Nawaf Salam is restoring it. Fouad Makhzoumi extends its sovereignty: the man who stood in parliament and called for Hezbollah’s disarmament outright, welcomed the Washington talks as the first crack in decades of imposed war, and pressed for one army, one state, and borders demarcated with every neighbor. No hedging. No triangulation. What was assassinated on February 14, 2005 wasn’t a man. It was a school: Sunni leadership as state builders, not sect bosses. Beirut, Riyadh, and Washington spent twenty years asking when this would return. It just did. The PM file is a delivery question: who can rebuild the state, attract Gulf and international capital, and tell a militia “no” without flinching. The question now is whether the rest of the political class has noticed, or whether the moment has already moved past them.

That's how shifts begin in the Lebanese context. This move matters because it restores a minimum level of political coherence where there was none. It signals that parts of the Lebanese system are trying to reassert state centered decision making instead of leaving strategic files in fragmentation. Fouad Makhzoumi, in this move, shifted the tone from absence to presence, from dispersion to coordination. That alone changes how the file is perceived internally and externally. As for President Aoun, this creates a more stable political floor and reduces the argument that state engagement lacks backing. The pressure dynamic is now clearer. With a defined institutional direction on the table, hesitation is no longer neutral; it becomes a position that needs justification, particularly by actors like Hezbollah.

🚩THREE MAJOR MOVES TODAY Today at hotel Phoenicia, MP Fouad Makhzoumi delivered the most significant Sunni political breakthrough since Hariri’s exit. He brought together the Sunni MPs and produced what four years of fragmented initiatives could not: a single, public, parliamentary position endorsing the Lebanese state’s authority to negotiate directly with Israel through the Washington track. One room, one voice, one file. 1. Makhzoumi reconstituted a Sunni political center, the first time since 2022 that the community speaks with one voice on a strategic file. The post Hariri vacuum closed today. 2. He handed Joseph Aoun the parliamentary cover he needed against hezbollah’s obstruction. They can no longer claim the Washington track lacks national consensus, only that one group stands against it. 3. The signal to the region and to Washington: the Lebanese state has a domestic majority behind direct negotiations. Hezbollah now rejects them alone, exposed. Bottom line: The negotiation file is no longer Joseph Aoun’s gamble. It is Lebanon’s position, and the burden of refusal has just been transferred onto a single address.

@BecharaGerges You're right, Bechara. It would be more accurate to say a minority of politicians within Lebanon's robust Christian community that allied themselves with Hezbollah, just as some Sunni Lebanese did.

x.com/i/status/20505… #Lebanon's Sunni Muslim community steps up to support Beirut in making peace with #Israel. The Shia community is hijacked by #Iran, and the Christians are divided, with one part supporting Iran and Hezbollah. So a group of Sunni Muslim politicians led by MP @fmakhzoumi create a moderate center to give a boost to Lebanese govt and army to make a historic peace with Israel and end Iranian influence in Lebanon.

Today, Sunni MPs led by @fmakhzoumi, reaffirmed their commitment to the state, its institutions, and its sovereign decisions, including the endorsement of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel. There is now an official majority backing President Aoun and Prime Minister Salam in support of establishing peace.

🚩The hypocrisy didn’t start with Iran. Ask Lebanon. After the 2020 port blast killed 220 people, Macron flew in, hugged the survivors, and walked out having handed the same warlords a French stamp of legitimacy. The Élysée called it diplomacy. In Beirut we called it what it was: cover for Hezbollah, a photo-op on top of a mass grave, and a green light for the political class to bury the investigation. Now Paris is shocked the Washington track left it on the platform. You don’t pose as the conscience of the region while laundering the IRGC’s last functional proxy in the Levant. Macron didn’t betray a value. He revealed which side his France plays for.

🚩In 2010, Lebanon’s politicians strangled Future Pipe Industries’ Akkar plant. They blocked pipes manufactured in Lebanon’s poorest region from reaching Lebanese infrastructure projects. Those pipes, produced by the company Fouad Makhzoumi founded, owns, and runs, now circle the world four times, made in Abu Dhabi instead of Akkar. This morning, Makhzoumi signaled the factory comes back. It is the only kind of campaign opening that matters in a country drowning in slogans: a deliverable, name stamped on a factory gate. The man owns a global industrial empire spanning ten countries. He tried to anchor part of it in Lebanon’s most deprived district. The militia state and its political enablers killed it. The signal he sent today is a wager that the political conditions are about to change, and his politics are the precondition for that wager. He has stood in parliament and called for Hezbollah’s disarmament outright. He welcomed the Washington talks as the first crack in decades of imposed war. He has pressed for state monopoly on force, border demarcation with every neighbor, and an end to the militia veto over Lebanese sovereignty. No hedging, no triangulation, no “resistance” caveat. Lebanon’s PM file is a delivery question. Who can rebuild the state, attract Gulf and international capital, host industry, and tell a militia “no” without flinching. The current political class has produced nine governments since 2005. None of them put a single new factory into Akkar. Fouad Makhzoumi is the only serious candidate whose name is already on the gate.

🚩For Lebanese Christians, Israel was never the enemy, that was someone else’s issue, draped over our shoulders for more than half a decade. We read the Levant the way Emiratis and Bahrainis and many others quietly read it, the way the Druze of Suwayda and the Kurds of the northeast read it: through the cold logic of communities that survive only by seeing clearly. Our experience is our own, so is the verdict it produces. We need a peace in which Christians are principals, not props. Without it, the geography called Lebanon keeps drifting into a destructive unknown, and we drift with it.

🚩44 years, and Christians in Lebanon are still measuring men against a ghost. That tells you everything. Bashir didn’t fall from the sky. He was built, by a generation that understood power is taken, not requested, and that a community without its own decision is a community waiting to be sold. Look at what passes for Christian leadership today: men who give up ground every round and call it pragmatism, who mistake being invited into the room for deciding what happens inside it. The truth no one will say at the Sunday lunch: we don’t lack a Bashir because the times are harder. We lack one because we stopped raising men who could be one. We traded the project for nothing. The decision for the dependency. Bashir was killed once, the Christian community has been killing him every day, by refusing to be worthy of him.

Fouad Makhzoumi@fmakhzoumi
