Over 42 years since starting medical school and after nearly 38 years working as a doctor, a long day on acute medical unit yesterday reminded me afresh that medicine is hard…intellectually, practically and emotionally but also personally (if not financially) rewarding

Proud to see the involvement of Dr Duncan McGregor, former Nottingham GEM student in this story and who just happens to be our GEM Clinician of the Week this very week!

Good luck to all our Year 2 GEM students who are sitting summative exams this week. Let’s hope all the hard work is rewarded and you can soon enjoy preparing for practice during the clinical phase of training

Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine
During Black History Month, we celebrate Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first African American woman to earn a medical degree in the U.S. Her efforts to confront “intense racism” and gender bias in medicine is a testament to resilience and determination. #DrRebeccaLeeCrumpler

Bristol project to improve skin tone diversity in medical photos - we need to prepare students and ourselves to account better for skin tone in the assessment of clinical signs so our clinical reasoning and diagnosis are inclusive of everyone. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…

Very important reflective session with students today about the emotional impact of patient deaths. Very open and mature discussion with those with prior experience sharing and supporting others. Thank you

Hugely impressed with the work of our Y1 GEMs in clinical reasoning this week. Two standouts - understanding the concept of pre-test probability and the importance of identifying associated symptoms in generating diagnostic hypotheses. Well done 👏

Saw ‘Dear England’ in London for 2nd time. Huge fun and very funny. Excellent cast. Great night out. Highs and lows of England football team but also allegorical for country’s struggle with its history and future in 21st century. Highly recommend it.

Year 1 students have done well this week listening to murmurs. Key not simply to teach them how but also why so they start to reason what is happening physiologically and what this means for the patient’s experience of symptoms. Definitely more challenging but a good start

Very good session with our Year 2 students this morning on diagnostic error. Excellent engagement and teasing out of the issues in each of the case based discussions. Displayed some good grasp of sources of bias in clinical reasoning

Just prepared tomorrow’s session on heart murmurs. Always my favourite part of the teaching year as students listen in and start to diagnose murmurs for the first time

Good to have found time also to progress latest writing project on the evidence base for the history and exploring symptoms. Fascinating combining anatomy and physiology with how patients experience their symptoms and reasoning through the diagnostic process

Good to get a break over Christmas and catch up up with friends and family. On-call was busy but important to ensure we do our best to provide access for our patients as best we can. Seeing patients remains the best part of the job
