@bee_fumo Ofc your personal device does not need to be infinitely secure (it just has to be secure enough to deter other people from wasting their time on you).

I am kind of shocked how many people disagree with this statement considering linus torvalds himself has gone on record for not really being focused on security. Guys it's fine that your average linux distro is not secure by default. Not everything needs to be insanely secure. That's why we have projects full of people who care about that stuff.(like the SELinux people at the NSA which whose software prevented the recent vulnerabilities and kept your android device safe)

@icpolicy Yes but I seriously doubt it was a developer decision to move the start menu to react native and make decisions like that. Management probably heard something about accelerated development and went ahead with that.

@bee_fumo For major architectural or product decisions this may be true but I've worked in plenty of large software companies and I can confirm that every day developers are making very stupid choices that hamstring performance.

@NTGKerwas Certainly important but again don't get security advice from me. I'm the type of maniac that does this ask grok what this means

@ramennnnoodle Oh I know they can make no mistake. Its how I installed fedora the arch(TM) way. However its a far cry from a good solution. And you know, many they should not place packages in your account either.

Most package managers actually do let you specify a custom root so you *can* actually install packages to your local user directory (you can also do that anyway if you build stuff yourself from source), it's just not default or recommended behaviour

Okay here goes. 1. One of the benefits of BSDs/Windows/Mac is that the entire operating system is a single package developed by the BSD/Windows/Mac devs. instead of being a collection of packages from random projects we all happen to share. 2. Really do not like the fact we need to use root to install packages. There's no reason why i should need to use root to install neovim or steam all non system packages should be shoved in a seperate piece of storage that is aware of both per user or multiuser installs. (nix is cool) 3. Most of the people working on your applications are unpaid, overworked, or amateurs. Not necessarily the people working on your distro. But if you combine it with 1 and 2 you start realizing how much power random people on github have over your system. Now make no mistake there's a few things we do better than Windows but also not that better. For example the fact we ship mostly open drivers ourselves is a good thing. However we should probably start moving towards drivers in the userspace as much as possible. Android started doing that and I think it's the correct approach. I could certainly see a linux-drivers project working in tandem with linux and linux-firmware.

Age-verification laws designed for iOS & Android are creating headaches for the open-source world, and the Linux community is pushing back. Our founder, Carl Richell, has been one of the voices engaging directly with lawmakers on this. As he testified before a Colorado House committee: "Open-source software ensures that everyone, regardless of age or background, can learn, experiment, and build at the most fundamental level." Colorado just passed an open-source exemption, but similar bills are moving in CA, IL, and NY. @verge has the full story.
