What should be a joyful day for students and families was shattered by gun violence today. My heart goes out to all affected. No child should have to fear for their life in Virginia, or anywhere in America. We must take further action to keep our communities safe.

I am running for the House of Delegates. The governor said we are all on the same ship - but unfortunately many do not have the same access to a meaningful life. That’s my WHY.

@heymrsbond I notice her BLM/pride flag pin on her lanyard, while also noticing language like “prone to fight.” I wonder where else anti-racism work doesn’t show up in her classroom, and I wonder if she understands how being a truly anti-racist teacher would’ve changed this situation.

Walked into a class that was putting away their Mothers' Day projects. First grader: Ms. Driscoll, how old are your kids? Me: I don't have my own kids. First grader: But you have a husband? Me: Yes. First grader: ... I didn't know you could *do* that.

Today I went to a middle school where many of my former students go, and they were having a dance. They saw me and squealed and we had a big group hug and all did the Cupid shuffle together and it was the highlight of my year 🥹

Maslow’s Hierarchy is not lock-step. We can’t control is a student has ALL of their safety or physiological needs. We can do everything we can to address those needs, but even when we can’t meet them all, we don’t need to wait before addressing their esteem & actualization needs.

@MrDanielBuck Perhaps you should take note that the people here agreeing with you are saying some pretty racist things, and the people who are calling you out are not saying standards should be lower for Black kids. High expectations is part of anti-racism.

@MrDanielBuck Are expectations and standards being lowered, or differentiated or changed? Who decided what standards should be and what is their reasoning behind setting these standards? And this only applies to Black students, not other students who receive modifications? 🤔

I just see expectations and standards lowered again and again only for black students all in the name of equity, and it’s condescending and racist and damaging and disgusting and I’m just sick of it.

(3) I *did* say that it's good for the community for those who opt out of public school to find ways to support them (through mentoring programs, supply drives, service projects, attendance at board meetings, etc).

“How do we create belonging in an educational system where every child wasn’t meant to belong?” -@DrJMatth This is an important question for educators to wrestle with even when it makes us uncomfortable. Achieving justice-based equity depends on it!
