@gabehornesquire I’m not sure Zeppelin was seen as *that* cool in the 90s (although they did have their descendants in Soundgarden type bands and other metal bands so perhaps I’m understating). But yeah Stones’ longevity did end up lowering their cool. Think at this point its doable though.
English

@beenthrifty Idk how accurate this is but I feel like Zeppelin probably has a lot more Gen X fans than the Stones do because they were more cool to like. The Stones were the past their prime dinosaurs still getting played on MTV in the 80s and 90s. Gen X raised Gen Z so they like Zeppelin too
English

The kids like Zeppelin from my experience. Rolling Stones gets less pushed onto them/canonized in large part because the folks curating can’t find the obvious gist/narratives of the band to hook them in like they do with others. Failure of mythology.

The Rolling Stones are too bluesy for Gen Z. That’s the long and short of it. Bands like the Beach Boys/Beatles maintain a large young fanbase because they never expressed themselves as rough and rowdy in the same way the dad rock bands did. Same goes for Led Zeppelin.
English

@jef_fh I think certain rock bands still definitely hold up in terms of interest from younger folks. Cultural moments can help but also just explaining better how counterculture the Stones were while still being a big mainstream band could probably work too. Just don’t think we do that.
English

@beenthrifty yeah they don't really have many outstanding moments for the culture to latch onto. sympathy for the devil in black ops / paint it black in guitar hero 3 might've been the last time they had a clear entry point
album bands don't really stand a chance in a tiktok dance world

@thewillmorgs19 I don’t think early Wilco or Uncle Tupelo is ever gonna be hailed by younger folks as YHF. Perhaps as they get older but not during youth, I imagine. But the Stones aren’t gonna die off or anything.
English

@thewillmorgs19 Yeah, obviously country is still a giant deal. But it’s a giant deal that’s partitioned away a bit. Also not looked as something to seek if you’re not already inclined. It’s definitely a bit dependent on the demographic but some genres have more crossover history than others.
English

@Chuck0slovakia I think country is extremely popular…with people who grew with country. But it’s also a polarizing genre due to demographics. Straight blues is not a standard but it’s still acknowledged as “something to respect” by those who aren’t initially familiar with the genre.
English

@beenthrifty Disagree. Country is extremely popular right now, and is probably more popular with under-25 Americans than maybe any other point in history. Blues has almost zero footprint on current music, and most blues-flavored music (e.g., solo Claption) has been discarded as lame dad rock.
English

I actually mean the opposite in that I really like Hotel California and don’t like the other songs
nadine (mood stabilized era)@fakenadine
whenever people say the eagles suck they usually just mean they hate “hotel california” and they cannot name another eagles song. it’s such a tired ass take
English

@Zarathak23 It can be easy for all of us to step into but yeah it just tends to diminish things over time in both the positive and negative
English

@beenthrifty Jonathan Rosenbaum noticed the same thing in the 90s. It stops us from actually thinking about the art

@FlatEartherK1tt Better quiz Nasir on what he learned when you get back. No Spark Notes for him either 🫵🏿

@Anthonysmdoyle It’s awesome, straddles the weird with the accessible unbelievably well

@beenthrifty I love the Score. Weirdly feels like a forgotten album sometimes and I don't know why.
English

I’m surprised Miseducation has boxed out the Score legacy-wise so thoroughly now. I get it in a sense (especially album- perspective-wise) but the Score was also a huge phenomenon (and I think it’s the better album by a tad)
bomani@bomani_jones
it ain’t my favorite but that doesn’t matter. the people have clearly spoken. not everyone needs a deep catalog. sometimes once is enough.

@paulxt Mista Don’t Play, Cold Vein, Devil’s Night, Miss E…So Addictive, In Search Of…, Labor Days, Pain Is Love, I’m Serious, Disposable Arts, Stillmatic, Blueprint, How High soundtrack, Word of Mouf, Will Rap for Food. Not all faves of mine but all define the years to come.

Today at the magazine, we're launching "The 2001 Project," a series on the rap records that defined that year and laid a blueprint for the next 25. The first edition comes courtesy of @drewmillard, about an LP that is as prescient as it is unfashionable powmag.net/p/tech-n9ne-an…

@ElHijoDelSimon I 100% feel that at least Rey/Angle is better off for being worked as a sprint
