The release of 123 Belarusian political prisoners was achieved through diplomatic efforts by the U.S. Government, ongoing activism by the Belarusian democratic movement, and international pressure. As part of the agreement, the U.S. lifted sanctions on Belarus’ potash exports, while Lukashenka demanded the deportation of prisoners from Belarus as one of the conditions for their release. We ask the U.S. Government to maintain pressure on Lukashenka. Sanctions relief should reward the Lukashenka regime’s genuine actions to free political prisoners and stop threatening NATO allies, but must not undermine pressure on Russia for its aggression against Ukraine and NATO countries. The dictator has turned our country into an extension of Russia’s war posture in Europe. This is not the choice of Belarusians. It is a regime trading sovereignty for survival—a regime at war with its own people. There can be no lasting security in Europe without a free Belarus.

We will know when repression stops in Belarus. When arrests end. When political trials disappear. When independent media and civil society can work freely again. But today, repression continues at full force. And so does our struggle to free our people from the regime's terror.

While Lukashenko was “releasing” political prisoners, unprecedented repression continued in Belarus. The dictator keeps taking new hostages to traffic people. It is necessary to force him to finally stop the repression.
