The limiting factor on frequency of fast trains between Liverpool and Manchester is **congestion in Manc** rather than the Chat Moss line itself. If #NorthernPowerhouseRail "allows more stopping trains to run", how exactly does that work in central Manchester? #hs2 #SpotTwaddle

More epic #hs2 bonkers stuff from 'Modern Railways'. Increasing the linespeed from 300 km/h to 330 km/h would reduce capacity, not increase it. #bonkers

@philatrail #hs2 twaddle-fest thread starts with the absurd claim that a 125mph alignment would be 'little different' to a 225mph one, and ends with 'a new eight-lane motorway' being the only way of 'providing said transport capacity'. 🤡

Good thread from my old mate Andy. If HS2 has a problem then I suggest it’s not with what we’re building but with how we’re building it.

Loads of #hs2 nonsense over the weekend. Let’s try and put some of it right. 1) opting for much slower - 125mph would have made little if any difference to alignment. Yes, curves could have been tighter, but that would simply have taken the route closer to places…

Simon Calder Travel Insider #tip: how to 'defraud the railway' by buying a ticket from Derby to Nottingham, not using it, and claiming a refund minus £5. #GeniusTip available only until Wednesday.

Without its 'superlative' speed p1ssing-contest aspect removed, what is the point of #HS2 at all? It's obviously totally unnecessary for 'capacity'. As any perusal of the ORR origin-destination matrix demonstrates.

The scope for #hs2 'saving billions' mostly disappeared with the decision for a 400 km/h alignment and the absurd infrastructure, such as porous portals, which emanated from the objective to have the fastest railway in Europe mediacentre.hs2.org.uk/news/porous-po…

The March 2026 #hs2 report to Parliament implies there are savings in the "'low billions" from not running trains at 360 km/h, including obviating the need to send them abroad for testing "at that speed". This sounds like baloney.

@belebenso They all seem very keen to blame the Tories, but the original specification, including the speed and the essential route date from Gordon Brown's Labour government.

At this stage, actually completing #hs2 phase one is just a face saving exercise. Everything else is gone. It's clearer than ever that the speed is not needed, the capacity is not needed, the railway is not needed.

If the government were in any way serious about reducing the costs of #hs2 they would be doing things like 100% cancelling its dedicated rolling stock order. Just get new generation ICWC trains when needed, that could also be used on the phase one rump if/when it is finished.

The incompetence of those now in charge of transport in this country is staggering. This HS2 article is basically fact-free. All of its sourced assertions are bollocks - yet this rubbish is currently further wrecking HS2. thetimes.com/business/compa…

As for a linear and granular relationship between the cost of #hs2 and peak linespeed, that seems highly implausible. A lot of the costs were baked in early from the decision for an ultimately 400 km/h alignment.

The idea that trains couldn't be tested until #hs2 is 'finished' is somewhat true, the non-highspeed part of the testing could be done in advance at Velim, or somesuch.

Today's Sunday Times story on #HS2 claims "every extra 1mph increases the budget by £1 billion" and "the locomotives cannot be tested until the route is finished" (etc).
