A big turnout today for the protest over the death of Congolese man Yves Sakila outside the Dail - which heard calls for thorough investigations without delay.

A vigil on Henry Street honoured Yves Sakila, a Congolese man who was murdered after an alleged shoplifting incident. He was pinned on his back and neck, the same lethal restraint that murdered George Floyd. Call it what it is: racist, reckless violence. Everyone involved should be charged with murder. Worse still, in a crowd of onlookers, nobody intervened. Mr Sakila was detained, became unresponsive, and was later pronounced dead at Mater Hospital. Members of the Congolese Community along with the broader African community and locals in Ireland prayed, sang, and laid flowers at the site of his detention. The Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, says an investigation is under way, accountability must follow, not excuses.

We can’t let this go you guys , we simply can’t. Even if it’s 20 minutes you can spare of your lunch break if you work in the city, please show up and take a stance. We cannot accept use of excessive force against people, we simply cannot.
