About Yesterday.
The initial FSU Alert didn't come in until 12:02pm .... according to the newly released TPD timeline, the shooter had already been neutralized by the time this first alert went out. Of course there's always potential for multiple shooters, which is something we understood at the time.
My students and I hunkered down in our classroom for an entire two hours, not knowing what was going on. This was an extremely unsettling and lengthy period of time. Rumor after rumor after rumor came in on social media with very few FSU alerts to keep us reassured, even though the initial threat had been neutralized since noon. At one point during the lockdown, there was no new alert for about 30-40 minutes.
About an hour or so into lockdown, we started to see images on social media of someone being loaded into an ambulance in shackles, which gave us a little hope that maybe they "got the bad guy". We relied on testimony from other students and other faculty members in other buildings , through messages, calls, and social media, which often came in quicker than FSU alerts.
We first learned that SWAT was sweeping and clearing out the buildings from our peers who were in other campus buildings. Only after learning this, the alert came in announcing the evacuations and that they would be clearing the buildings stating they would use the safe word "SEMINOLE".
In our classroom MCH201, there is an outer door which leads to a small lobby and then an inner door that leads into the classroom. We had no idea the doors to our classroom were locked because the inner lobby door was unlocked (with no way to lock it!) and the only way to check if the outer door was locked would be to actually go out in the hallway and test it... who wants to do that during an active shooter situation? ... There is no way for an instructor to lock doors via the teaching station and/or for the instructor to know that the doors have locked via some sort of informational display on the teaching station screen. This needs to change.
When officers got to our room around 2pm, and attempted to breach the outer door, they did not use the safe word. All we heard was repeated loud banging on the metal door outside the lobby. This was extremely scary. There was probably four or five rounds of loud banging on the outside door, making it clear that somebody was trying to breach. In that moment, I had to make a decision whether or not to make my presence known to the officers so that I could let them know that there were 80 students inside that needed assistance evacuating. I took a chance and made my presence known to them by yelling "I can open I can open" and luckily was able to quickly peek at tiny window in the door and see that it was in fact, uniformed officers. I have never had to put myself in that situation before and I had the fire extinguisher by the door ready to go as a blunt weapon.
I want to be clear that this is no way meant to be critical of FSU. It is a factual recall of what we experienced being on lockdown for two hours.
I really admire the police's unbelievable response time to the incident. They shot the suspect 3-4 minutes after the incident began. This is an unbelievable response time, and all Noles thank them for their bravery.
God forbid if this situation were to ever happen again, I hope that Florida State takes the comments and testimony of faculty and students who lived through yesterday to heart. I can't help but feel that in some classrooms, students and faculty were left in a very stressful situation, holed up, with very little info. There are ways that we can improve our system during times of emergency to further help protect our FSU family and reassure them during stressful times such as these.
🙏
