since becoming an army in 2018, i have witnessed a journey both delicate and powerful.
jungkook, still so young and acutely aware of the world watching him, often followed advice, suggestions, even commands disguised as love and concern, adjusting his body and actions, as though each change were an external decree. he examined every decision with care, measuring his worth through eyes that were not his own.
then later came the tattoos. quiet, yet deeply revealing, and with them emerged a new jungkook. slowly, he began to stand more firmly within himself. he allowed himself to experiment, to doubt, to correct, and little by little, to bloom. years went by, and by the time he debuted as a solo artist in 2023 with GOLDEN, i found myself looking at the same face i had known for years, but illuminated by a different light: deeper, steadier, unmistakably his own. that passage, from doubt to self-knowledge, from fear to a fullness embraced with confidence, from harsh self-criticism to self-respect, is a memory i hold with reverence, gathered across all these years of admiration.
it was painful to witness how he used to be his own harshest critic: questioning himself after performances, doubting his worth as both a person and an artist outside of BTS, confronting expectations that felt endless and, at times, unfair. yet it was equally liberating to see him emerge from that pressure as an adult radiating assurance with every word and gesture; someone who now allows himself kindness, who thinks out loud, who shows vulnerability without shame. to witness that transformation, was something priceless.
it's disheartening to see those who believe that loving someone means freezing them in time, as though authenticity must remain untouched to remain acceptable. as a child, i believed change was something to fear. now, at nearly 26, i understand that the purest expression of loving someone is to walk beside them as they grow, to recognize that transformation is not loss but expansion; and that the pursuit of their own happiness is a sacred right of the person you love.
one of the greatest acts of love is not asking your loved one "not to change", but embracing their evolution, even when it means we may no longer experience them in the same way. wanting someone to remain stagnant for our own comfort is selfish. the human mind fears change and conflict, but it's precisely through those challenges that we grow and learn to savor life more fully, once we choose to understand and confront them.
jungkook shouldn't have to carry the burden of expectations that many would never apply to their own lives. there are those who fail to understand that change is inevitable, necessary, universal; who judge by inconsistent unrealistic standards and project their frustrations, the echo of their own stagnation, onto him, unsettled by an authenticity they cannot comprehend or control. such judgments often come from those unwilling to face the truth of their own stuck lives, from those who struggle to witness someone shining in a way they cannot replicate; an envy concealed, though not entirely invisible.
as a fan, i cherish witnessing this process, and every step he takes. as a psychologist, i feel proud seeing that even though he may not fully understand his emotions, he doesn't shy away from expressing them with honesty and raw sincerity. as a person, i feel respect and empathy: even those we assume have their lives resolved experience vulnerability, and choosing to open that door is a profoundly human act. every laugh, every tear, every quiet confession becomes a lesson in authenticity that transcends music and the stage.
i know this is not his final form; jungkook will continue to grow, to transform, to explore new dimensions of himself that will ignite conversation; from voices that understand the fragility of being human, to those that project their performative moralities and personal frustrations onto him, as we see today.
