Should we blame Trump voters for their choice? Twenty years ago, Green Day grappled with the same question under Bush—and answered in the affirmative. Calling people “idiots” won’t win them over. But questions of complicity remain, writes @ben_clark56. prospectmagazine.co.uk/culture/68529/…

“Few people are irredeemably idiots, and breaching sociopolitical divides remains imperative. But as Trump ascends to the most powerful office in the world once more, can we deny that idiocy remains a powerful force in public life?” ✍🏼 @ben_clark56 prospectmagazine.co.uk/culture/68529/…

In @prospect_uk I rewind to 2004, when Bush had just been reelected, with a popular majority. Liberals were bewildered by the public’s choice. Sound familiar? Into that context stormed Green Day’s American Idiot, calling out middle America’s complicity… prospectmagazine.co.uk/culture/68529/…

PS The idea it’s the “working class” rebelling is overcooked — it’s mostly the middle + a dip across the board. It brings up awkward questions for the left too — the public often care more about prices than full employment. They aren’t naturally egalitarian + must be persuaded.

I haven't read all that many but this is the first 'auspol takeaways from the US election' article that didn't make me feel like I was pumping mince slurry into my brain. Thanks @ben_clark56 crikey.com.au/2024/11/12/cos…

The strongest argument for a Bernie candidacy was always image and comms. He’s a guy who could go on Joe Rogan and get him to basically endorse him. Dems need WAY more of that. The challenge is convincing normies that social democracy is good, despite their current inclinations

A rare L from Bernie. The Biden admin was about as pro-working class as a Sanders admin would’ve been in the same circumstances (partly coz they listened to him). One can argue about context, promises, comms, candidate/ timing, but they didn’t lose on redistributive outcomes
Bernie Sanders@BernieSanders

It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them. While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change. And they’re right.

Everything I read on the election spends way too much time on how Dems could’ve had alternative policies and/or messaging. IMO - The only things that could have changed things were 1) if Biden admin had done more to control inflation and/or raise incomes in office 2) if 1 not possible, Dems had found a convincing replacement candidate not associated with Biden admin. Without 1 or 2 defeat inevitable, and the only thing that threw us all was polling being off.

@meadwaj The UK graph is by area, and the US figures appear to be by individuals’ income. Both don’t account for wealth, and higher wealth still tends to skew more conservative in most jurisdictions. The rising incomes of left-leaning voters are usually well-paid grads with no assets
