In a hypothetical we are asked to accept unspoken or spoken boundaries. If the purpose is to inspire critical thinking or challenge current assumptions, then proposing an idea outside of the hypothetical could actually be constructive. In my experience most hypotheticals have limited options for outcomes leaving a smaller arena for internal discourse. And though it can be frustrating for the presenter, inquiring why the subject stepped outside the assumed boundaries could bring a wealth of information. Other reasons can be that one would like more context or find a hypothetical irrelevant, regardless of the presenter's motives. Real life is perhaps the greatest hypothetical of all. We are constantly looking for cheat codes and options beyond the recognized norms. But I would definitely ask them why they came up with a choice outside of the hypothetical.

@Hitchslap1 Don’t tell me what to do, Hitch! 😂 As someone who appreciates abstract thought, I know to stick within the bounds I’ve been given. Some people don’t appreciate constraints in their thought process, and will abstract the abstraction. Possibly a lack of conscientiousness.

Whenever I say, "Would you rather A or B?" someone will respond, "I would rather C." Why do people have so much trouble with basic hypotheticals?
