Some research that should worry those investing in political ads on Meta; removing political ads from users’ feeds had no detectable effect on turnout, donations, political knowledge, candidate favorability, or polarization. open.substack.com/pub/yello/p/an… via @yellopolitics

The Green’s social video content around the Gorton & Denton by-election was very strong indeed. It was entertaining and there was a lot of it. impressive.

“Starmerism is about being a safe pair of hands when everybody else has gone nuts”. Astute observation from @hugorifkind. The deeply misleading campaign behaviour in Gorton & Denton from Labour both damages democracy and undermines the core of their brand.

Could this be a "good" case study for how misleading election ads harm you in an election and of course damage your brand (that is positioning itself on trust and integrity) @UKLabour. You don't need to mislead to sell stuff ask the UK's £42.6bn ad industry governed by the ASA

NEW: Labour embroiled in dirty tricks row on eve of Gorton and Denton by-election. The party has put out a leaflet saying "Tactical Choice" say voters should back them to beat Reform. Only, Tactical Choice don't appear to exist. Story 👇 huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/labour-a…

The Greens and Reform have been intensely guilty of misleading campaigning in this by-election. But Labour have lost any claim to the moral high ground with this awful stuff.

As a #Transparency campaigner who's long been calling for reforms to our electoral & Parliamentary system, The Representation of the People Bill (the Elections Bill) has landed. As expected most of the robust detail is being held back until the Rycroft Review into foreign interference is completed. But so far the plans fail to address a host of their concerns: donation caps, crypto (Reform has received the 1st crypto donation), increased powers for the Electoral Commission to increase independence and impartiality. And it's all very well having a new rebranded Ethics and Integrity Commission, but without the powers and independence needed to actually deliver results, it's as useful as a chocolate teapot! Serious concerns, based on real data, raised by @refpoliticalads are also not addressed in the Bill. See their blog here reformpoliticaladvertising.org/the-misleading…

🧵 MPs are learning how it feels to be a Gorton & Denton resident today. To raise awareness of our recommendations for the Elections Bill we've sent a fake newspaper, The Misleading Times, packed full of dodgy bar charts and made up data to their desks in Westminster.

Let’s see how they like it… A ‘newspaper’ packed full of dodgy bar charts & bogus information is being delivered to MPs in Westminster. When political parties use fake news to win votes, we all lose.

RPA is calling for 4 things in the Elections Bill: 1/ proper imprints 2/ a deepfake ad ban 3/ a public repository of all election ads 4/ a Code of Practice enforced by regulators to stop inaccurate advertising

The paper is 100% fabricated, featuring headlines like "Politician rushed to hospital after trousers spontaneously combust". It’s funny, but the point is dead serious: under UK law, political ads are exempt from the factual standards that govern commercial ads.
