That someone like Orbán can take us for a ride for a decade, collecting all the money with no repercussions for being a traitor, is a huge blemish on the Union and significantly damages our capacity to act. We need to go back to the drawing board and redesign the whole construction.

1) why is it a good things to have more owners occupiers? Is it supposed to be good in and of itself or because it achieves an unstated goal? 2) it doesn’t necessarily follow that less rental supply means means fewer investors owned and more owners occupied dwellings. Investors might stop renting the dwellings out without selling them, even if they wanted to sell, there might not be enough people to buy them, they might let them fall into disrepair which would just reduced the total number of dwellings… 3) even if we accept that more owner occupiers is a desirable goal and that the total number of units stays the same (units just switching from investor owned to owner owned 1 for 1), it still wouldn’t solve the main issue with housing, namely that we need more of it. And rent control discourages building more of it

@TrueSlazac @chflorelius But if rent control actually did cut rental supply that would mean fewer investors owning dwellings which would mean more dwellings for owner occupiers which would be a good thing.

Here is something I had not realized. Functionally, the US' strategic petroleum reserve may have less capacity than the stated figures. Should stocks fall below a certain threshold, it could damage the structural integrity of the actual storage facility. ft.com/content/2b002c…

On verra donc en juillet si les colis à destination de la France y arrivent de nouveau directement où si maintenant la chaîne logistique modifiée ils continuent à passer par le nouveau chemin même en l’absence d’avantage fiscal. Dans le second cas, même en étant favorable à cette taxe, il faudra conlure que l’introduire avant le reste de l’UE est un foirage.

Le choc était parfaitement anticipable étant donné la masse de colis concernée par cette taxe. Et même si c'est pas glop pour les entreprises et salariés concernés, c'est pour la bonne cause. Pour rappel, en 2024 il y avait 4,6 milliard de petits colis qui étaient rentré en Europe depuis l'étranger. Ça fait 12 millions de colis par jour. Ce chiffre était le double de 2023 et le triple de 2022. 91% de ces colis viennent de Chine, largement en raison des plateformes du type Shein/Temu qui ont envahi le marché. Il était donc grand temps de fermer ce trou dans la raquette. Au delà des conséquences pour le secteur de la logistique, ici il est aussi question de fast-fashion, des mécaniques des plateformes pour pousser à l'achat, des questions de déchets/environnement, du financement des douanes, etc. Donc en tenant compte de tout ça, oui cette taxe est une bonne chose. Je dirai même que si elle mène à une réduction du nombre de ces colis d'une manière générale, ça sera une excellente nouvelle. Une taxe équivalente au niveau européen va rentrer en vigueur à partir de juillet. Donc on peut se demander pourquoi la France n'a pas attendu juillet, ça aurait pu éviter le contournement via la Belgique. Mais vu que la France a été en pointe sur ce sujet et vu les tensions avec Shein ces derniers mois, probablement il y avait une envie politique d'être les premiers à dégainer.

La solidarité c’est de garantir un revenu qui permet de vivre décemment pas un niveau de vie supérieur à ceux qui financent cette solidarité. Les retraités ont cotisé et ont le droit à une pension mais le niveau de ces pensions est à revoir.

Non, les retraités ne sont pas tous idiots et ont bien compris le système de répartition. Le problème est de leur avoir fait miroiter la solidarité au détriment de la capitalisation individuelle puis de vouloir changer les règles du jeu à la dernière minute.

We are enthusiastically willing to pay TSA workers today, and we will keep trying, but the sticking point is that Republicans want to attach ICE funding to it. We are not in agreement about ICE, but I don’t think workers and travelers should have to wait for an ICE deal.

This was neat: Researchers traced a tariff on $5 European wines into the U.S. to see who paid it. The tariff itself was $1.19, producers paid $0.26 and importers took a $0.44 cut, but retailers used the tariff as an excuse to add a $1.10 margin. The price went up $1.59 (~32%):
