if you think that the problem of declining literacy and interest in literature is found in the content of books - static across time - and not the wider, shifting (material) culture within which literature is situated, you are not fit to be in charge of anyone’s education.

“these are not books to ignite a passion for reading”; and yet they have for many hundreds of people for many decades. no doubt curricula are in need of constant reform - not least to incorporate a breadth of themes, ideas and perspectives - but this approach is misdiagnostic.
