I’m Chinese, but I’ve been part of the Japanese Itasha community for quite a few years now. I also lived in Canada for a long time, where I owned a bone-stock Itasha myself. Given that background, I think I can provide some perspective on this.
The bottom line is this: The vast majority of Itasha owners and fans don’t believe a stock or unmodified car is a problem at all. This discussion has happened countless times on Twitter—there was actually a massive one just last month. We usually joke about it as the "Itasha Class Meeting" (痛車学級会 Itasha Gakkyu-kai).
Ultimately, an Itasha is about personal fulfilment. It’s a way to express your love for a character or a series, and a way to communicate that passion to society. There’s a saying, "十人十色 Jujin Toiro" (ten people, ten colours)—everyone’s idea of the "best" Itasha is different. Whether it’s a factory-spec daily, a drift car, a Time Attack build, VIP style, or something else, if it achieves those goals in the owner's heart, then it’s a great Itasha.
The true meaning of Itasha doesn't lie in the modifications; those are just the icing on the cake. Honestly, during my years in Canada, I never understood why some people talk so much about individualism yet feel the need to criticize other people's hobbies. It’s someone else’s money spent on their own interests to achieve their own results. No one has the right to judge whether another person's Itasha fits their personal taste.
We should respect every Itasha owner who puts their "heart" into it. For our community, nothing is more important than that love. It’s about whether you care, not whether you’ve modified the car.
Without that "love," no matter how cool or heavily modified the build is, it’s just a hollow piece of paper with no soul.

Japanese itasha owners and enthusiasts. What do you think about a stock/unmodified car with an itasha wrap? This has been a controversial debate in the American itasha community. I wonder how it is overseas.
