Oggi su Domenica @sole24ore racconto l'interessante ricerca della scienziata cognitiva @berent_iris che suggerisce un'accentuazione del dualismo intuitivo (la separazione mente/corpo) nelle persone transgender

For years now I've wished that my ideas about the human longing to matter--how it can go so right and how it can go so wrong--might be shared with others. And now that's about to happen, and I'm unspeakably grateful. theatlantic.com/books/2026/01/…

@schwick777 Don't know. At stake is (a) whether ToM promotes consciousness, and if yes, (b) whether its role is computational or substantive.

@berent_iris Or, the question of when robots will become “conscious” can be easily resolved: at the moment when the theory of mind module in humans activates, creating a sense of the robot’s subjectivity. You can agree with me or am I mistaken?

@berent_iris Does intuitive dualism work in humans on other people or on animals too? I would be grateful for the answer.

@langofmind @GaryMarcus Absolutely! It’s precisely because we are intuitive dualists that we ought to give physicalism careful deliberate consideration

@berent_iris @GaryMarcus I think it's ok to profess physicalism even if we have implicit dualist biases. It's aspirational! It's ok to commit to a philosophical position, even if you fall short of cohering it with all of your other beliefs (a computationally intractable process!)

Many people claim they are staunch physicalists. But when given a brief implicit association task, it turns out they are closet dualists. Thanks @GaryMarcus for challenging us! Out in Open Mind. direct.mit.edu/opmi/article/d…

I'm writing a post that explores the value of the field of psychology. One way to frame the question is to ask: If there were no psychologists, what would the world miss out on? Anyone?

@GaryMarcus I can certainly see why humans might succumb to that illusion. Could you please elaborate the evidence for why it is (an illusion)? thanks!

“LLMs spin an illusion of sentience, as they use language scraped from intelligent humans”
TheRealChrisMiddleton@strategistmag

@farukguney @GaryMarcus I like the phrase... it has a beautiful ring to it. The problem is, as Einstein said, everything is relative. More accurately, the illusion is seeing small steps as giant leaps. Meanwhile, LLMs spin an illusion of sentience, as they use language scraped from intelligent humans.

@steveburchill Thanks for your thoughts, but I don’t believe we say anything to that’s effect.

@berent_iris There were assumptions made....(and I am not attempting to confer the insinuations over sexuality and inclined characteristics)--- (but you are..!!)-- between homosexuality and left Handedness (1950's)..a systematic assumption that by testing a theory gives the theory credit

Is #dualism shaped by formative life experiences? This new paper shows that transgender people are far more likely to align the self with the mind than cisgender individuals. We conclude that the #sex-#gender contrast is partly a mind-body contrast. nature.com/articles/s4159…

@2dedostesta5 @SwipeWright @battleforeurope I am completely WITH transgender people. These results do not undermine their experience, just the opposite--it shows that there are profound psychological differences that are very real!

@2dedostesta5 I agree. This is not about whether the mind IS distinct from the body; it's about whether people BELIEVE so. People tacitly assume that "I'm not my flesh". In transgender people, this belief is far stronger, even in matters that have nothing to do with sex and gender.
