We had a whale of a year🐳 We continue to explore language and intelligence in humans, animals, and machines -We uncovered vowels and diphthongs in sperm whales -We discussed what this means for law and anima rights -For the first time, LLMs can do recursion and metalinguistics

This interpretation shifts attention from polished interfaces and fluent outputs to the hidden structures that make those outputs possible and structured in the first place.

We are mostly seeing end products, final outcomes, exteriors, in that sense. We are—deliberately—not seeing what is going on inside. Interpreting the latent space as a cartography, or as an architecture, changes that.

This project argues that latent space—the learned, multidimensional, representational substrate of neural networks—is not only a mathematical construct but, read through literature, a structure akin to architectural interiority that renders the abstract physically legible.

Recent work at Project CETI (the Cetacean Translation Initiative, focused on studying communication in whales, dolphins, and porpoises) shows that sperm whale calls feature vowel-like sounds that resemble elements of human speech.

"Law has long treated language as a uniquely human capacity-and a foundation for rights. But emerging research in Al and animal communication challenges this assumption. This talk presents a new theory of language across humans, animals, and machines, and explores how this
