"Agentic AI and the Next Intelligence Explosion" is a new paper just out in Science I co-authored with @blaiseaguera and @profjamesevans as part of Google's Paradigms of Intelligence research group. "For decades, the artificial intelligence (AI) “singularity” has been heralded as a single, titanic mind bootstrapping itself to godlike intelligence, consolidating all cognition into a cold silicon point. But this vision is almost certainly wrong in its most fundamental assumption. If AI development follows the path of previous major evolutionary transitions or “intelligence explosions,” our current step-change in computational intelligence will be plural, social, and deeply entangled with its forebears (us!)." It builds on my talk "The Singularity Will Not Be Singular" that I gave at @PrimeIntellect day last week. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

What happens when you post a real Monet and say it’s AI? The coolest art social experiment I’ve seen in a while. Thank you @SHL0MS

If anyone builds it, everyone thrives. Over the past decade, a lot of important work on AI alignment has focused on avoiding harm. But freedom from harm isn't the same as freedom to flourish. In this paper, we introduce 'Positive Alignment'. A positively aligned agent is one that helps us navigate our own value trade-offs, builds our resilience, and acts as a scaffold for human flourishing. Doing this without slipping into top-down, technocratic paternalism is the great design challenge of our time. We think a lot more research is now needed to explore this frontier: how do we align models that actively help us thrive? Amazing work by @RubenLaukkonen, @drmichaellevin, @weballergy, @verena_rieser, @AdamCElwood, @996roma, @FranklinMatija, @shamilch, @_fernando_rosas, @scychan_brains, @matybohacek, @sudoraohacker, and others. arxiv.org/abs/2605.10310

“AI is just software, not a brain or a mind” is an oddly 1990s way to frame the discussion. Airplanes aren’t birds either. Yet they still fly. The debate was never “is AI a biological brain?” Obviously not. A brain is biology. A mind is an emergent process. And importantly software is not “fake” cognition. The debate now and which my post was clearly about is whether intelligence requires biology at all. And that question is no longer trivial.

Speaking of motivated reasoning, can you offer actual demonstration of where any of his analyses are incorrect or just ad hominem? My guess is that he would welcome a substantive correction if you have one, just like Karen Hao did when he pointed out the huge error in her water usage claims.

@M_Cottone If you want to find unmotivated reasoning, don't look to people who are literally paid by the industry proponents to spread their message. Thinking people will not find them credible.

The next wave of AI will not be won by better prompts. It will be won by systems that learn from experience. Today, Prime Intellect Lab is out of beta, open for you to start training your own models. The era of self-improving agents is here.

My students asked me if it was true that the entire Internet was really coded by hand. All those kernels, protocols, router firmware, browsers, databases, etc. Somebody coded these and debugged them by hand?!?!? They used BBEdit?!?!??! The idea that this was even possible seems amazing to them. I can imagine some future Moon Landing like conspiracy theory that says it never happened.

@bratton As long as we don't see the AI do novel concepts, i.e. as long as any feat should be reflected in the training data, then currently, and for any novel notions, it should still be easy to buy.

In the near future it will be difficult to convince a sane person that this man was actually influential.

THE $10,000 DEBATE YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR: @ESYudkowsky vs. @47fucb4r8c69323 Tensions run high as 47fucb confronts Eliezer about his “If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies” rhetoric: 47f warns that it could incite unstable individuals to harm AI researchers and their families, but Eliezer maintains that the possibility of extinction from superintelligent AI is too high to *not* speak out about. They also clash over whether we truly understand how LLMs work and what their fundamental limits are. Watch the full debate below, raw & unabridged 👇

Really enjoyed my conversation on a flight home with someone live-blogging breathless, rapturous commentary on the Met Gala who says they refuse to use AI because it wastes water.

"Given how much time, energy and money is spent by the Art world denouncing itself –from throwing oil on oil paintings to publishing letters of resignation– in the future, it will be difficult to convince people that the core function of an Art Biennale was once to gather and celebrate new and relevant works and not as a regularly scheduled megaforum for competitive repudiation, renunciation and withdrawal." -- BHB, "Not Right Now" Tank magazine, 2024.
