When Africa demanded independence in the twentieth century, the lawyers who argued the case, the journalists who told the story, the politicians who led the movements, a disproportionate number had one thing in common. They had studied in Freetown. The Athens of West Africa. That Britain built. Fourah Bay College still stands on that hillside today.
