he’s such a nuanced complex deep human it baffles me that he’s an idol but also i’m so thankful that he’s so unapologetically himself & existing in kpop spaces like this, it’s so refreshing to love someone who has a profound thought process & self awareness the way he does :,)

🐻❄️ i think i’m someone with a fundamentally strong defense mechanism. which is why it might seem like i’m giving you quite a hard time right now, too. i’m definitely unable to respond very easily. i also don’t really like asserting [myself] cos even i don’t know when my mind will change. and i really hate ending up saying things i don’t mean just for the sake of speaking.

👤 career-wise, aren’t you in a position wherein you’re able to reveal those kinds of things, like your interests?
🐻❄️ right. being able to reveal those interests is rather the new cool now. when i just debuted, i didn’t have that kind of vibe at all
👤 were you a bit different?
🐻❄️ i mean either way, i debuted 11 years ago, so. i think i was confused back then. i felt like i wanted to have individuality but i also felt like i wanted it to die down. i had a lot of confusion regarding that but it’s definitely different now

vernon about: thelma & louise 🎬
🐻❄️ there’s a scene where brad pitt is holding a hair dryer. i first saw that in a movie called ‘big daddy’. back then i just thought “oh brad pitt is handsome” but after i grew up, i found out it was a scene from this movie and decided i should watch it
👤 what do you like about it?
🐻❄️ it can be tragic if you only look at the incidents in it, but what i appreciated while watching is it’s just such a refreshing and fun road movie. how do i say, it deals with injustices quite refreshingly? i can’t say that it’s a perfectly correct [way of] handling them, but i think people who can’t stand injustices will really like it. though it’s likely you’ll be even more upset if you watch it until the end, but that’s also an element of this movie.

👤 do you like ghibli films?
🐻❄️ of course
👤 can you recommend?
🐻❄️ princess mononoke. it’s so cool & pretty. the characters, animation
👤 isn’t that also abt revolting against the system?
🐻❄️ right. i think my parents are into those kinds of things. so i feel like i’ve been gaslit by my parents [into liking them too], seriously
👤 (laughs) how so? by only showing you those kinds of movies?
🐻❄️ exactly (laughs)

vernon talking about sofia
👤 what about your family? is it harmonious? normally it gets indifferent as we grow older
🐻❄️ yeah, my sister and i have gotten closer recently
👤 was there a specific moment you got closer with her as you’ve gotten older?
🐻❄️ first of all, we missed out on each other’s adolescences. the fact that we didn’t experience each others’ teens years is a huge thing. she even went to the US for her studies. we spent our time physically apart and even in different cultural regions. i sort of felt awkward. she came to japan when we were on tour, we spent time together and got a lot closer.

🐻❄️ a member called the8 and i are preparing for a unit album
👤 does it bring out some of your personal style?
🐻❄️ it feels a bit like that for me
👤 how much have you worked on it?
🐻❄️ we have to write all the lyrics now
👤 people like lyrics that talk about youth. and what i’ve felt as we’ve talked today is, isn’t it burdensome for you to be revealing that?
🐻❄️ it is!
👤 you don’t have to though, and there are a lot of people who don’t
🐻❄️ it may be burdensome but if i don’t do that, i think it wouldn’t feel meaningful to me. so i try to do it with no regrets

vern 😭
👤 even as a trainee, you kept having to let yourself be known by being open. wasn’t it stressful?
🐻❄️ it was so stressful. the members were like “i’m svt leader scoups” and being the leader is so convenient cos you don’t have to decide on a modifier, just leader! the others were like “i’m the small dinosaur dino”, “i’m gaze of the tiger hoshi” i hate that kind of stuff. so i thought what should i do? i was like “i’m seventeen’s mixed race vernon”
👤 (laughs) i feel like the ceo wouldn’t have liked that!
🐻❄️ i got told off so much

vernon’s tip on how to enjoy watching movies
🐻❄ watch when you want to. even for movies that may seem boring or would be something you hate, how do i say this.. there’s also fun in watching what makes a movie boring
👤 but isn’t that something you can’t endure? watching something boring for 2 hours?
🐻❄ that's what makes it fun! making you [cringe]
👤 it’s somehow kinda meta
🐻❄ you can kinda see it that way
