Hey everyone! My name is Jess and this is the November #sbstwittertakeover and #PhDdayinthelife. I'm a final year PhD candidate working in the Centre for Evolutionary Biology - I study sperm and fertilisation in marine invertebrates!🦪Keep an eye out for my tweets today!

🚨 📢 🐢 Happy my third PhD chapter is finally out there in the world! Using the @NatCapProject coastal vulnerability model, we show how sea turtle nesting beaches over more than 600km of coastline are vulnerable to erosion and inundation.
Ecosphere@ESAEcosphere

From our Coastal & #MarineEcology track: #ClimateChange is making coastal zones vulnerable to erosion & flooding; a new study models the vulnerability of Western Australia beaches where #SeaTurtles nest doi.org/10.1002/ecs2.4… #OpenAccess @MalindiGammon @Science_DBCA

We all love releasing turtles, but how about dealing with a billion data points as well? Siobhan Paget nailed it, and great to see her paper out today that changed where we are trialling assisted colonisation @BiolSci_UWA @Science_DBCA @Biodivcouncil @climatecouncil

As one of the first animal species to be relocated due to climate change, WA's tiny Western Swamp Turtle has the eyes of the world upon it. 🐢 🐢 🐢 bit.ly/3OihaZw #UWA #climatechange @UWAresearch @NickiJMitch

Hot off the press! Perverse outcomes from fencing fauna. We find that a population of havened woylies show weakened anti-predator responses after 10 years isolated from predators. Read more below🧵 doi.org/10.1016/j.bioc…

We've been working on this paper out today (and open access) for over 7 years, so bear with me while I tell you the story of how we discovered that wolves kill and eat sea otters (Panels A-D) and what this means for wolves, otters, and deer. /1 pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

Our conservationists were recently out in-the-field with partners in a secret location in Western Australia to translocate 44 critically endangered western swamp tortoise, in the hopes of helping this reptile survive the impacts of climate change. #RegenerateAustralia

Did you know there are as few as 80 adult western swamp tortoise remaining in the wild? 44 captive-bred swamp turtles were translocated and released into a secret location. We hope this helps the Critically Endangered species survive the impacts of climate change.

@simonyetmonyet @minimbus Hi Simon! Not all of the turtles are being relocated. The ones released down south were captive bred at Perth Zoo. The ones in Twin Swamps and Ellen Brook NR are staying put 🙂

As my supervisor @minimbus said: it's not every day the New York Times visits your field site. Definitely a highlight of my PhD so far! Have a read about some of the conservation efforts underway for the western swamp turtle 🐢:
The New York Times@nytimes

The western swamp tortoise’s natural habitat in Australia is becoming increasingly unsuitable as temperatures rise. An experiment to preserve the endangered reptile is the latest debate over how far humans should go to protect nature as the world warms. nyti.ms/3FLiTlr
