"[Reform's] backward-looking and divisive politics needs to be challenged head-on with a message that the future can be better and fairer than the failed status quo. Don’t vote in anger, vote in hope.” Good luck to Sarah Wakefield in the Makerfield by-election! 💚

🟢 EXCL: Senior Green Party figures have urged Zack Polanski to consider stepping aside for Andy Burnham in the Makerfield by-election if the Greater Manchester mayor commits to introducing proportional representation Green councillors, activists and former party leaders have signed a joint statement warning that the party should approach the contest with “trepidation” The letter, whose signatories include Jonathan Bartley, who led the party between 2016 and 2018, and Rupert Read, a former Green councillor and author, says that Burnham’s election presents a “unique opportunity” to secure reform “In all reality this is not a seat Greens can win. It will be a straight fight between Labour and Reform. But it’s no ordinary by-election. Labour’s candidate, Andy Burnham, is looking to return to Westminster to lead in parliament.” “If Burnham will commit to backing proportional representation for the next general Labour election manifesto so that it is in place by the election after next, then on this unique occasion we don’t think Greens should run a full campaign against him,” the letter says Full read in @thetimes 👇 thetimes.com/article/16d6ba…

@bets8181 @DarrenBar88 @getprdone I'm confused on how you can say we're unpopular when we have outstanding local election results, have the best polling we've ever had & membership likely puts us as 2nd largest party in UK at least. You say what we did in the last GE... But the next GE is the 1st of the new age

@WillBarnish365 @daisyeastlake The green party are that unpopular their supporters would rather vote vote for what they call "right wing labour"😂 And this is what you will do in the next general election. And this is what a lot of you did in the last general election.

@daisyeastlake Completely agree. They cannot risk allowing another Reform MP to be elected. Doing so would be catastrophic and damn right dangerous for the country.

If the Greens are to stand down in Makerfield, the least they should demand in return is that the Labour Party: End the block on coalitions with the Greens in local government. Stop publicly calling Green candidates antisemitic and respect the party's disciplinary system.

Green Party still hasn't picked a candidate after sacking the last one for correctly identifying a false flag as a false flag, meanwhile their main rival is saying stuff like this and will still get elected. Absolute state of it.

@DarrenBar88 @getprdone I very much understand using every opportunity to challenge Labour (& others). But part of me does wonder if the effectiveness of such challenges does play a role in perception moving forward. Wins (esp unexpected ones like G&D) are crucial.

@sp4rkl3jumpr0p3 Agreed, although I wonder how much of this is being pushed by the right wing press, because they see the Greens as a threat to the cosy status quo that threatens their rich owners.

I say we, the wider membership, pen an open letter urging the party not to stand aside. Who would sign? We must make opposition to neoliberalism a core value of Green Party if we are to have any chance at wider success long term

This is bigger than the by election also IMO We need to take a stand as members against bureaucracy in the green party, seniors in the party should not feel comfortable trying to push against campaigning
