Myth: Downpours have always happened. Rainfall isn’t changing. Truth: Warmer air holds more moisture — about 4% more per 1°F of warming. When storms form in warmer air, they can produce heavier rainfall. A nationwide analysis of 1,700 U.S. weather stations shows a clear shift toward heavier rain in recent decades. When it rains, it pours — more than it used to.

7/ As a physician, I believe this: Secure watersheds = healthier communities. Clean water = longer lives. The health of the planet and the health of people are not separate issues.

🧵 1/ In 2018, Cape Town nearly ran out of water. "Day Zero" was days away—the moment taps go off for 4 million people. The culprit wasn't just drought. It was plants. @nature_org @Nature_Africa

What a meaningful milestone for Tennessee education. When I founded @SCORE_TN in 2009, Tennessee ranked #41 nationally in student achievement on NAEP and eighth among 11 Southeastern states. Our goal was clear and ambitious: to help Tennessee become #1 in the Southeast. To see Tennessee now leading the South in K-12 student achievement is a personal dream come true and a testament to the students, teachers, families, school leaders, policymakers, and partners who have stayed focused on improving outcomes for every child. The work continues, but this moment matters.
SCORE@SCORE_TN

Tennessee’s latest Education Scorecard results signal more than learning recovery — they are further proof that Tennessee has become a national model for K-12 education. New national research from @HarvardCEPR, @seda_data, and faculty at @dartmouth shows that from 2022 to 2025, Tennessee ranked: 📈 #2 nationally in math growth 📚 #4 nationally in reading growth ➕ Nearly HALF a grade level gained in math ➕ Nearly 20% of a grade level gained in reading This comes on the heels of new @NAEP_NCES data analysis showing Tennessee is now the #1 state in the South for K-12 student achievement. The work is far from finished, but this moment matters, and it belongs to all Tennesseans working to improve outcomes for students. Myth: "Occasional exposure to polluted air is harmless for children." Truth: Even short-term spikes in air pollution can affect developing lungs, hearts, and brains. Cleaner air is not just an environmental issue. It is a children’s health issue.

Each year in the U.S., vehicle collisions kill an estimated 1–2 million large mammals and roughly 200 people, costing more than $10 billion annually. What would change if we designed more infrastructure with health in mind? More in my latest Substack: tr.ee/overlookedconn…

Roads, culverts, flood systems, and wildlife corridors are not just engineering projects. Increasingly, they are public health interventions.

How do we move fast enough to innovate in health care without moving so fast that we lose trust? Important discussions today at Cressey & Company’s Annual Meeting in Chicago on AI, affordability, and the future of care delivery with Jacob Shiff, Chief AI & Technology Officer at the @CMSGov Innovation Center. AI can reduce complexity, expand access, and give clinicians more time to care for patients. But health care cannot confuse speed with wisdom. The goal is not simply more efficient care. It is care that is higher quality, safer, more affordable, and worthy of trust.

The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the environment around us shape health long before someone enters a hospital. Enjoyed joining the final episode of the season of @ConserveMA's Webby Award-winning podcast, “Nature is the Solution,” on the connection between nature, climate, and human health. 25 years ago, I delivered Maryville College’s commencement address and received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. This weekend, Tracy and I returned as @JenMorrisNature, CEO of @nature_org, delivered the commencement address to the Class of 2026. Then and now, @MaryvilleC has reminded me what Appalachia teaches so clearly: people, place, health, and nature are deeply connected. Congratulations, Class of 2026. 📷: Maryville College; Wes Hope/Maryville College

What does courageous leadership look like in a divided and rapidly changing world? This weekend at @MaryvilleC, @JenMorrisNature, CEO of @nature_org, delivered one of the most thoughtful commencement addresses I’ve heard in years. 📷: Wes Hope/Maryville College
