Why are mls fans so protective of their league? Even at the expense of lying and embarrassing themselves? In Scotland, the fans and the press bemoan our own league and constantly point out its shortcomings. Is it an American thing? Really low self esteem? A lack of identity?

I would literally fire 2/3 of MLS managers to hire Wilfried Nancy right now. MDS would be the shortest tenure in MLS history.

If you want to use Wilfred Nancy as proxy re MLS quality (or lack of), fill your boots. Maybe not fair, but it comes with territory and players/coaches coming from US accept it. He was an abject failure and obviously wrong hire. But he’s a romantic, and everyone knew…but Celtic.

@3four3 Look the tragedy of Nancy is he went to a club that on paper should beat every team in the league. If he had gone to the bottom three quarters of the league no one would care. Three teams are expected to win in every league in Europe.

Regarding the case that coaches in MLS don't get developed (e.g. Nancy). It's not complicated. When parity is enforced and all teams are basically the same with no huge disparities, a coach is practically rendered inconsequential. When there is NO PARITY (such as in the rest of the world), coaches are forced to learn and have enormous dynamic range. There is HUGE tactical diversity, by necessity. The coach of Levante has to rack his brain when confronted with Real Madrid, which is different than a mid table team which is different than a relegation-threatened team. Every week it's totally different chess games. In MLS, it's merely the spinning of a roulette wheel. The dumbest coach can win, and the best coach can lose. It doesn't matter. Not to mention over half the table makes the playoffs (considered "success"), no relegation, a SOFT docile fanbase, and a business model that doesn't depend on winning or sporting excellence, making weekly regular season games practically inconsequential. @DiceElDani Please. The lack of winning is why you have relegation. There are teams every season that do horribly. You could argue that he should not have coached Celtic. That’s fair. But come on if had coached one of the worst teams in the league where they expect to lose. Then what.

MLS fans shouldn't be shocked about Wilfried Nancy getting the axe... THIS is how you actually run a high-level club. In Europe or South America, you don’t get three years to "find the chemistry." You don’t get results? You’re out. The problem with MLS is there’s too much comfort. Too much complacency. There’s no pressure to HAVE to win. We’ve turned "patience" into an excuse for mediocrity. Now that the dust has settled a bit, if Russell Martin does become the next head coach of #Crew96, I’m personally excited for the hire. He doesn’t play the exact same style as Nancy, but his system utilizes players with similar skillsets.

@socialPolly @umirf1 @BBCSport The MLS is built on parity. Salary caps and other weird restrictions (ignore Miami) Just traveling thousands of miles to play a game make it difficult to win away. You need a deep bench for Nancys system and the crew this past year had a bunch of injuries.

I don't watch MLS but from I've now seen, celtic should be all over this guy 29 games with 16 goals and 3 assists from midfield

I feel really sorry for Wilfried Nancy. I totally understand if someone thinks he isn’t right person for the job or doesn’t like his tactics,l But some of the stuff directed at him is so personal and full of hate and he really hasn’t done anything in 2 weeks to deserve that

Calling people “rats” isn’t protest it’s dehumanising. That language comes from a minority, not the Celtic support I know. If that’s the backdrop, I would appeal to people against attending the Green Brigade protest today. Celtic is better than that. So are most of its fans.

I wish @ColumbusCrew fans on here, who I previously thought were sound, would accept that they don’t understand the cultural importance of football in Europe and particularly Scotland. It’s deeply woven into the social fabric in a way it never will be in the USA.

@StandForCeltic Celtic used to be a decent team that won games. It clearly is the lack of belief from the fans. The coach has belief as you just pointed out. The football gods are punishing you directly and specifically for your poor attitude and lack of support for the team. Repent now.

I honestly don’t know why this has rattled so many. I admire Nancy for bluffing his way to this position, he really has shown that anything is possible and you should never give up no matter how incompetent you are. It’s a positive. I admire him.
