The Birmingham Food+Culture Festival commemorates Alabama’s culture and culinary identity, and we’re thrilled to have Southern Living host our signature event, Food+Fire, on September 21, which celebrates two of our greatest culinary traditions - BBQ and tailgating. Featuring cooking demos from celebrity chefs such as Kelsey Barnard Clark, Jess Pryles, David Bancroft, and Michelle Wallace, on the Southern Living Tailgate Stage presented by @Hellmanns, Food+Fire is a celebration of the region’s best pitmasters, its tradition of live-fire cooking, and Southern tailgate culture. Plus, there will be live music by some of the South’s hottest bands, a lounge with a giant TV screen for watching the day’s big games, a craft beer and wine garden, and some of the best barbecue you’ll ever taste. FOOD+Culture welcomes Carla Hall to the FOOD+Market Mix event Saturday, September 21st, where she will bring even more flavor to our favorite Farmer’s Market- featuring your fave farmers, storytellers, and female chef demos! Carla Hall first won over audiences when she competed on Bravo’s “Top Chef” and “Top Chef: All Stars” and shared her philosophy to always cook with love. She is a trained chef who has worked in several professional restaurant kitchens and believes food connects us all! Carla has been involved in many areas of the culinary industry- co-hosting ABC’s Emmy award-winning lifestyle series- The Chew. She’s currently featured on Food Network as a judge on numerous competition shows and her latest cookbook, Carla Hall’s Soul Food: Everyday and Celebration, landed on “Best Cookbook” lists across the country, receiving an NAACP Image Awards nomination. Help us welcome Jesus Mendez to our star lineup of talent! Born in Tabasco, Mexico, Jesús and his family migrated to Birmingham, Alabama, in 1994. It was while working at one of his mother’s favorite restaurants, Margarita Grill, in Pelham, AL, during his teenage years that Jesús developed, honed, and prioritized his work ethic and leadership skills. Over the years, he has worked at several restaurants that have made a mark on his career, inspiring him in his next chapter- his own local businesses, including Unos Tacos and The Louis in The Pizitz Food Hall, as well as a forthcoming outpost of Honest Coffee Roasters. We can’t wait for the grand opening of his latest venture, Salud Taqueria! And we can’t wait for him to join us at this year’s FOOD+Culture Festival!

We’re so excited to welcome Chef Rob McDaniel to the lineup! McDaniel and his wife, Emily, own and operate Helen, a contemporary Southern grill in downtown Birmingham! Inspired by traditional Southern cuisine from his grandmothers, he honed his knowledge of and appreciation for sustainable cooking and became an advocate for supporting local farmers and preserving regional resources. McDaniel has worked under many prestigious chefs, creating a dedication for simple recipes enhanced by flavorful ingredients. FOOD+Fire is thrilled to welcome Chef Nick Wallace of Nick Wallace Culinary! Mississippi born and raised, Nick credits his grandmothers, Queen Morris and Lennel Donald, for sparking his love of the culinary arts. Nick’s passion for culinary arts has led him to serving as an Executive Chef for some of the country’s most prestigious museums and hotels. Nick’s accolades, to name a few, include SBA Business of the Year 2023, Bravo Top Chef, Voted Best Chef of Mississippi 2022! He has also presented five Mississippi-themed dinners in New York for the James Beard Foundation. Oh, did we mention he’s been featured in Southern Living Magazine, Food Network- Comfort Nation, Cutthroat Kitchen, has won Chopped? ¡Salud! Help us welcome Co-Founder and Beverage Director of Adiõs, José Medina Camacho to FOOD+Funk, where he’ll be serving hand-crafted cocktails for Sunday Funday brunch! José was born in Michoacán, Mexico and ultimately landed in Tupelo, MS where he found his true passion in the beverage industry! He now calls Birmingham home and has worked in beverage management for some of Birmingham’s most popular restaurants and bars. He now manages operations and leads menu curation for Adiõs, creating classic cocktails with Mexican-made-and-grown spirits and ingredients. Let’s raise a glass to Thomas Price, Master Sommelier at 1856-Culinary Residence, who will be joining us at this year’s FOOD+Frank! From California to Alaska, Price climbed the ranks in various positions within the culinary world but eventually landed behind the bar where his passion for wine was instantaneous. In 2012, he obtained his Master Sommelier certification, becoming the first African American to ever hold the prestigious title! Price now resides in the great state of Alabama, where he works for Auburn University’s Hospitality Management Program as a visiting sommelier, he serves as the Chairman of @SommFoundation, has served two terms on the Board of Directors for the Court of Master Sommeliers of America (CMS-A), and currently serves on the CMS-A Diversity Committee! After earning his Grand Diplôme from Le Cordon Bleu London, Matt worked his way up the culinary ladder until he became the executive chef of The 404 Kitchen in Nashville, TN where he is known for his expertise in butchering and modern approach to Southern cuisine! In 2014 they were nominated for Best New Restaurant by James Beard Foundation! This is a taste of what’s to come as we continue to announce the incredible talent joining us September 19th-22nd at this year's Food+Culture Festival.
