In response to my post, some people are asking for books on political economy. Here are the 10 key books for my course on political economy of development that I teach at Cambridge.

Economics is not a (hard) science, it's not free of ideology, and it's not free of value judgements. Economists who claim to be doing 'objective' science are the ones you should be most sceptical of.

Evidence, if you ever needed it, of mainstream economics' breadth without depth. Colonial institutions extracted value and wealth from the Global South, forming the basis of Global North prosperity. This work depoliticises the historical process of decolonisation and distorts the contemporary relationship between developing economies and global financial institutions in perpetuating global inequality and debt. We need to roll back this assumption that economic development comes with the importation of western, capitalist institutions and engage with the core questions of political economy and history that are at the heart of economic development. #EconTwitter #NobelEconomia #NobelPrize

Congratulations to @DAcemogluMIT, @baselinescene & James Robinson on their @NobelPrize in Economic Sciences. While their work on institutions is important, it's crucial to remember that development is complex. As @yuenyuenang, @mushtaqkhan100 & Ha-Joon Chang argue, effective institutions must be context-specific, not just replicas of Western models. Truly inclusive and sustainable institutions should be embedded in local realities, learning from the full array of conditions necessary for development.

Draghin raportti vihdoin ulkona. Investointeja kasvatettava lähes 5 % EU:n BKT:stä. Pääomamarkkinaunionin viimeistely keskeistä, mutta vaatii myös yhteisvelkaa rahoitusinstrumentiksi. Ilmeisesti uusien fipo-sääntöjen ongelmallisuutta tavoitteen saavuttamiseksi ei käsitelty.

@OttoMeri Lautakunnan päätöksessä silta on palautettu uudelleenvalmisteluun ja edellytetty siihen lukuisia parannuksia. Teidän kokoomuksen ja perussuomalaisten lisäksi näyttää SDP:n toinen edustajista vastustaneen tätä esitystä ja RKP:n edustaja taas tukeneen.
