The Dodgers bought a World Series.
The Blue Jays tried to buy one and failed.
The athletic feats were impressive, but nothing about that was sporting.
I can't wait for a lockout, and if it doesn't come back with a cap and floor, I'm fine with it not coming back at all.
Do you believe the liberal media ( MSNBC, CNN, washington post, ajc, ABC, NBC News, nytimes, CBS News )is part of the reason for violence and divide in this country?
YES or NO?
Snow College MBB Head Coach Andrew May joined @espnthefan to discuss the recent addition of BYU Commit Chamberlain Burgess:
Q: Let’s talk about one addition to the roster that was a fantastic get. He was a top-100 recruit in the nation, served a mission, and now he’s back—Chamberlain Burgess, the 6’9” baller and shot caller out of Cedar Hills, Utah, and American Fork High School. Give us an update on Chamberlain and how you were able to land his talent.
Andrew May: Yeah, Chamberlain is actually the second four-star we have on this roster. We’ve also got a freshman named Bron Roberts, who played for the same AAU program—the Utah Prospects. So, adding Chamberlain late as our second four-star was awesome. Snow College usually doesn’t get guys with that type of pedigree, so we were thrilled.
Honestly, the process was pretty simple. BYU called us and said Chamberlain was coming home early from his mission and they didn’t have a scholarship open. For kids now, it’s all about playing and developing. Whether he went straight to BYU or came here, the idea was to find the best place to prepare him. For him, this is going to be a great step in his preparation to impact BYU down the road.
Because let’s be real—most freshmen going into BYU have a tough time making an immediate impact. This way, he gets a year of experience at a super high-level JUCO without using a year of eligibility. For the past two or three years, the NCAA has granted JUCO players an extra year, and we expect that will continue.
Here, he’s going against four or five mid- to high-major caliber bigs every day in practice. This isn’t a situation where he walks in and he’s the clear-cut best player. He’s got to grind, and that’s only going to make him better. That was part of my pitch: I’ve helped guys get to BYU before, and the difference between showing up as a freshman and actually impacting BYU is night and day. Here, he’ll be a step ahead—used to the weight room, the daily grind, and the consistent effort needed at the college level.
We’re also excited because his mom played for my dad at Utah Valley, and I worked with Coach Burgess at Salt Lake Community College, so there’s a real family connection. Chamberlain is a very skilled player, and we’re thrilled to have him.
Q: Where does he fit on your roster this year? What does he bring to the court and the locker room?
Andrew May: For his size—6’9” with a 6’11” wingspan—he’s extremely athletic: quick jumper, bouncy, excellent rim protector. He can also step out and shoot it. We have a daily drill called “License to Shoot,” where players have to hit 35 out of 50 from three to keep their license. Chamberlain’s consistently hit the mark, and in a recent scrimmage he went 5-for-6 from deep.
So he’s got that stretch-big ability. The big adjustment will be handling the physicality and consistency of college basketball, but the size-to-skill ratio is special. Pairing him with Bron Roberts—who’s 7’0” and shoots the three—plus our returning sophomore bigs (6’11” Sean Feltz, 6’9” Kyle Lemke, and 6’10” Aaron Bliss, all with D1 offers) gives us one of the deepest, most versatile frontcourts in the country.
We can even slide Chamberlain to the 4 or maybe the 3, which is exciting. The big question is whether he can adjust to the speed and physicality.
