This battle over Abrego Garcia is simple. It doesn't matter that he was here illegally. It doesn't matter if he's a gang member or if he's a wife beater (both of which are disputed). It doesn't matter if you think he deserves to be deported or to be in prison. / thread

I personally know a lot of Salvadorans and associate with them daily through my work. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I have not heard any of them say one single bad thing about Bukele. They love him and what he has done for their country. They travel home to visit family much more often now. The year before Bukele took office El Salvador was statistically the most dangerous country in the entire world. He ran a tough on crime campaign. El Salvador was dead in the water. Nearly zero foreign investment, no job creation, collapse of tourism, widespread trauma and fear, public mistrust in institutions, school dropouts, youth recruitment by gangs, mass migration to the U.S., gang control over communities. It was bad.. He’s arrested 80,000 people and the country has completely reversed course. What’s he’s done is an absolute miracle. And while it’s unfortunate if anyone was falsely imprisoned, the overall outcome is overwhelmingly positive. People are falsely imprisoned every single day in the United States. Society as a whole was far more negatively impacted by the extreme violence.

The crime is the association with MS-13. Bukele discussed this today. El Salvador currently has laws in place that criminalize gang membership, affiliation, or support. The are amongst the harshest in the world and have directly resulted in El Salvador going from the most dangerous country in the world to the safest in the Western Hemisphere.

@bigokro @SamStark93 @Acyn He is considered a criminal in El Salvador. He’s a citizen of El Salvador. The USA cannot force another country to give back their own citizen who they consider a criminal. He’s not an American citizen.
