@baggottsilver One of the kindest, most knowledgeable, and funniest people I'll ever likely meet. I'll miss his presence in this world enormously, but what a privilege to have known him. 💔

Well, just bought a thing. A quite unpopular type of thing, or maybe “overlooked” would be a better choice of words. It wasn’t cheap by any means, BUT, if it is as heavy as the auctioneers says it is, then quite remarkable. Will know tomorrow. Till then, fingers crossed.🤞

Is there really much of a price difference between the more common scratch engraved and rarer fully relief carved Chinese Export mother of pearl gaming counters you ask?

@bill4rest Oi! I’ll be sending you to Durham Museum for a refresher course if you’re not careful. 😂

And remember these copies can themselves be a hundred years old now. They can have scratched bases and signs of wear and still not be period examples. So don’t think every bit of hobnail cut glass you find in a charity shop is Georgian. It often only looks like it is.🤫

When I was a whipper snapper I was very lucky to sit at the feet of L.M.Bickerton. I listened. Glass forms persist, revived again & again during different periods, seemingly identical. So much is in the colour of the metal and telltale small irregularities.

If I didn’t have to buy an oven (it died on Christmas Day ☹️) would definitely be leaving a cheeky bid on this Georgian treat at auction today.

@baggottsilver You really need to write a pamphlet righting these wrongs - sugar nips, difference between a mug/tankard, etc.

@bill4rest That was beyond belief. Almost makes me think the chap might need his head examining…though on balance I suspect there’s nothing in it.😉

Antiques TV at it again. 🙈 Can we dismiss this absolute horse shit about a “mixing bowl”. The central covered bowl or container in a set of caddies or a teapoy is for sugar!!They even made some with an “S” engraved on them & it’s not “S” for “S-mixing bowl”!! #AntiquesPedant

TV “Expert”: “I’ve never seen one like that” 🤔 (Top Tip: Just pop over to the factory in China. They’ve literally got shelves stacked with thousands of the buggers.👍)

An hour or two (you can’t rush these things). First cleaning off the tarnish, then cleaning off every bit of the old hardened polish, then washing it all off, then rinsing it all off, then drying (thoroughly) and finally lightly going over with a soft dry cloth. #antiques

Until this very moment I was unaware of the concept or existence of AD (Architectural Digest) celebrity videos on YouTube. I’m so sorry, but once Pandora’s Box has been opened there’s just no going back…

Fiona: “featured on this week’s Antiques Roadshow a collection of secondhand tops from the 60’s and 70’s… next week Ted from Scunthorpe brings along a pair of underpants he bought in 1983 from M&S. Remarkably he still wears them to this day” #FFS (NotThe)#AntiquesRoadshow

Sold in the same auction but a hundred lots apart. Once I’d bought the jug & dish, why did I have to buy the bowl? #Antiques
